I’m smart, but not THAT smart…

Screen shot 2013-08-17 at 9.58.58 PM

A few days ago I received an email from someone who said (among other things), “you just write like you are too smart.”  Um, thanks?  Anyways, it made me think about the diversity of topics I cover, and I can understand that some may assume that Katherine is just trying to flaunt her knowledge because she’s sad that she hasn’t gotten eyelash extensions lately, isn’t yet married or something like that.  So here’s what I’ve come up with:

THE PERCEPTION OF KATHERINE’S KNOWLEDGE

MAY NOT BE 100% ACCURATE!

This theorem consists of 2 sub-postulates:

1)  I may not be as intelligent as this blog may give the impression.

2)  I am not as much of a media/(pop) culture junkie as this blog might make it seem.

Yes, both of those points are true.  It’s just that I have a painfully sharp memory (for good and for bad), and there’s not much that escapes my steel trap.  Also, I’ve done an excellent (though not perfect) job of keeping journals, music, pictures, articles, and other influences that are now part of the culmination of this blog experience.  So even if something did slip from my mind, I have it elsewhere to re-insert into my cranium.

As far as further inspiration goes, of course I wish to partake of film, literature, occasional television, music, journalism, and art.  But I also know that I need to pace myself, and that I cannot ever consume it all (don’t want to, anyways!).  Eternity is a long time; I can catch up on that Audrey Hepburn special I missed if I don’t get to it now, know what I mean?

Plus, I know that no matter what good influences I fill my soul with, I MUST leave room in my Christmas inn (don’t miss that Biblical allusion please!) for the most important:

Where is the wisdom in all this knowledge?

Where is the knowledge in all this information?

-James Faust

READERS:  Don’t feel overwhelmed if you can’t make it to every professional development conference, read every book, or catch every episode of your favorite TV show (hopefully it’s uplifting and not complete filth.).  Work hard, but also remember to try to keep some sort of balance.  Eternity is a long time.

Good problem to have…

Back to work now…

The milestone of the first bit of backlash you receive…

Image

IS AWESOME!  I recently had the slightest negative reaction to somebody who was perhaps a bit jealous of my tenacity and ambition in regards to this blog.  Please understand that the feedback was NOT constructive or voicing a legitimate concern.  It just was someone who was annoyed that I was a little blog happy, I guess.  And remember what I said to those people once upon a time?  🙂

Now I don’t mean to cause controversy, purposefully stir the pot, or ruffle anyone’s feathers (at least not without good reason).  And I DON’T believe that all publicity is good publicity.  However, I view this as a milestone.  So that person can take a hike, and meanwhile, I’ll get back to blogging.  And to living.

Although I am a fan of Sutton Foster,

when it comes to this blog, anything does NOT go.  The LDS writer Joanna Brooks has made me think about this and it’s implications regarding that golden line of propriety.  She has a policy of “Anything Goes” when it comes to comments on her blog posts, but I have firmly chosen required approval for mine.  But let’s get away from talking comments because I don’t really have a ton  (yet) anyways 🙂  I will not feature any experience/person/picture/video on this blog.  Again, I run the risk of coming across as self-righteous, but that’s alright because I like running AND I like risks.  And I also know that while I’m not perfect, I do my very best to not judge others while still holding true to my own convictions.  So while I respect Joanna as a human, Mormon, AND woman (just like me!), I differ from her in this regard, and in many others as well.

But there are a LOT of things I do wish to feature on my blog.  And many, many good things already in the works.  Stay tuned!

Is it weird that I sometimes smile when I read my own blog?

Joanna Brooks (half) smiles at her own stuff!

And yes, I’ve read it.  Mixed feelings.  Will blog about it soon eventually.

Just got another convert

to Google Docs! (though sadly now it’s all called “Drive,” which is NOT my favorite word in the world)

This is Todd.  Remember him?  Loads more to come about this guy, but for now, I’m glad I could bring him into the sweet spot of writing collaboration that IS Google Docs.  Dayan would be so proud.

I probably will never become a famous singer/writer/comedian….

Image

(that’s not really my goal, anyways), but if I ever do achieve any level of fame, it won’t be because I’m showing lots of skin, know what I mean?  No judgment intended for other artists, but this girl is talented/classy enough to keep her clothes on and still connect with people.  And that’s just how it is.

To my dear followers….

I’m sorry that I’m flooding your inbox.  I know you get an email every time I post, and at this point, I am writing between 15-30 new posts per day.  I think it will slow down eventually, but if you continue to follow me (and please do!!!), know that there will always be notifications.  🙂

Bait and Switch Title Techniques

Sometimes I use bait and switch titles.  But the thing is, I don’t feel like I’m being sleezy because the content of my post usually lives up to any hype I create, know what I mean?  They say, “sex sells.”  And I’m not afraid of the word or the subject, but I would be okay with President Monson reading this blog.  Plus I feel like I am talented enough of a writer that I don’t need to wrongfully exploit the subject of sexuality to gain or please readers/ followers.  Please read that as confidence, not arrogance.

That weird writer neighbor

Image  Screen shot 2013-08-04 at 11.13.56 AM

You know how in “The Princess Diaries” Mia has that weird writer neighbor?  He has no social skills and he’s always really nervous and awkward and half the time he’s in his pajamas and probably won’t ever get married.  He’s so sure that he’s on the verge of greatness, but in actuality will never make any money.  Yep, that’s me.

I feel like I have pretty good judgment…

(thankfully other people do too!) but every once in a while, I might be a little off.  To my knowledge I have not caused any tears, divorces, or deaths, but I have had a friend ask me to take down a picture that he/she (gender neutrality is the key to anonymity, people) didn’t feel was entirely flattering .  So yes, I will write about the people about whom I care (see what I did there?).  But I will present you in the best light, without putting you up on a pedestal, of course.  And if ever I do cross that line of propriety, just shoot me an email, and we’ll remedy it stat.  Sound good? 🙂

Ambivalent feelings toward fame and recognition

is a theme that good artists often explore.  As I see myself becoming a famous writer in the future (truth in jest), I imagine I will have to give this idea some thought.  Haha, but whether or not I ever get a single hit again, I find this a fascinating topic.  So for now, let’s just hear what Miss Natasha has to say about it.  And it’s hard for lyrics to stand out when they’re all good, but here are some notable ones:

“thirsty in a desert with a bag full of gold,

what I thought was precious was just a pile of stones”

Read ALL the lyrics here.

My (literal) dirty laundry is piling up…

Screen shot 2013-10-01 at 10.35.33 PM

BUT I JUST CAN’T STOP!  Faith has a short-shelf life, but so does inspiration.  It’s not a manic energy though, it’s just excitement and clarity.  Must only stop writing for the bare necessities (showers are up for debate).  And this kind of writer’s high is rare indeed.  Better take it and run with it.  Who knows how long I can go before I burn out?  Renae, you DO know he mentions Peachtree, right? 🙂

Being happy with my achievements does NOT mean that I’m not thankful to God

and vice versa.

PS.  Notice how I carefully avoided the troublesome word “pride” (and all it’s variations).  Will blog about that soon.  But for now, check out this land-mark talk on the subject:

To address some concerns…

I’ve had a few people respond to some of my posts in ways that make me think that THEY think I hate myself.  Posts about bad makeup or being single or whatever.  I appreciate your concern, and also know that even with such a flavorful writer’s voice as mine, it can be hard to read emotion via technology.  But please know that I am happy!  This is not me fishing for compliments.  This is not me rejecting compliments either 🙂

If I didn’t have the confidence to poke fun at my insecurities, I wouldn’t do it.  And here’s the thing.  The sweet spot that I’ve gotten to has made it so that my insecurities lessen (and even sometimes disappear!) when I find the humor in them.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Enough detail to be vulnerable, refreshing, and honest…..

but not enough to be inappropriate, vulgar, or insensitive.  That is my approach when it comes to this blog.  And to my life.  That is one of the reasons that I love (and hate) that little HBO show that shall be not be named.  That is (one of the reasons) why pornography is terrible (random tangent but true none-the-less).  That is how I strive to be.  It can be a fine line to walk,   Image

and all I can do is my very best.  I know I speak the truth on here, but I also know what to put in, and what to leave out, both about my life and others’. Remember, part of the 3 fold description of this blog is “human.”  That’s what I’m going for here, folks….I’m not afraid to put a hideous picture of myself on this blog (and there are plenty, aren’t there?)  Just so long as I can put pretty pictures up too.  According to Pinterest, Marilyn Monroe said that your clothes should be tight enough to show you’re a woman, but loose enough to show you’re a lady.

I want my blog to show that I’m a woman, and a lady.  And a Mormon.  The sum total of my experiences and beliefs make up Katherine.  I wish to celebrate the diversity of my identity and experience.  And in my 25 years, I’ve found that to be one of the trademarks of a great writer.  Now, I may not be the next Willa Cather (we got the whole Kath/Cath thing going on, though)  but believe it or not, I do put some time/ effort/ energy/ prayers/ tears/ laughter/ love into this lil’ blog.  In the end though, please simply disregard everything I’ve written previously because it all really just comes down to that Webby and what I think voters are looking for 🙂

Thanks for the compliment, Shania!

(start at 1:32)

Why thank you, Miss Shania.  I DO have a way with words.  That’s why I like to blog.  That’s why I like to write.  That’s why I like to think.  That’s why I enjoy deep conversation.  That’s why I like to read.  That’s why I got my degree in English from BYU.

….what….that STILL don’t impress you much?! “)

(Heather Johnson)

Oh, and Miss Twain, you are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women in Nashville, but that pink lipgloss is TOO pink, and that blue eyeshadow just ain’t cutting it either.  Navy blue mascara is SOOOOO 2002.  I’ll be your makeup artist next time, ok?

The Yellow Ipad

I wish the woman in “The Yellow Wallpaper” had an Ipad.  It would have made it easier to hide her writing.  And she probably could have read all about postnatal psychosis and learned what good drugs could have helped her feel better.  Mental illness is real.  But so is help.
