A mighty change of heart…

Screen shot 2015-03-05 at 12.22.56 PM

“Have you experienced this mighty change in your hearts?”
-Alma 5:14 (in the Book of Mormon)

Some changes of heart are dramatic, some are more subtle, but no matter the degree, in the words of James Faust (former 2nd counselor of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; deceased):

“The Power to Change is very Real.”

(Text-to-Self Connection):

When have YOU experienced a change of heart?

(“…a change of heart comes slow.” -U2)

PS: The woman on the bottom left is Norma McCorvey, aka “Jane Roe” of the infamous Roe vs. Wade. Once a staunch supporter of abortion “rights,” she experienced a mighty change of heart and is now Pro-LIFE!

To Love, I Rhapsodize

Image

In my BYU freshman college writing class, I wrote an essay analyzing biblical themes in the relatively obscure (but still awesome!) U2 song “Window in the Skies.” Some people thought I was weird and should have just written about a book like most everyone else did. But now I see how that simply presaged what I do now all the time: identify and analyze Christian/ religious imagery in sooooo much popular music. Cool!

1.  What habits did you start early?

2.  What have you always had a knack for/ interest in that has carried through the years?

to love I rhapsodize

PS.  I’ll dig through my mounds of junk and try to find that paper!

PPS.  I did get an A on it. 🙂

Love at Home.

(Love makes a home)

And did you know that there was a recent LDS conference address that specifically addresses the unique experiences and challenges of single parents?  It was given by this cool Scottish guy who was himself raised in a single-parent home.  I hadn’t heard anything like it before nor have I since.  Check it out!

Read here.  (It’s a good one!)

(Speaking to single parents:) “[p]lease never feel that you are in some kind of second-tier subcategory of Church membership, somehow less entitled to the Lord’s blessings than others.

In the kingdom of God there are no second-class citizens.

Friends, how can you cultivate love in YOUR home?

These lyrics describe a woman seeking escape from a heroine addiction.  Bono has expressed that he believes the phrase “Running to Stand Still” (the title of this particular song) perfectly captures an addict’s battle with such a powerful drug.

Bill Maher makes my heart sour.

Screen shot 2013-10-10 at 9.17.41 PM

Let Ms. Wilkinson give you the low-down

on what’s goin’ on with the fool pictured above:

Recap:

1)  I believe in free speech.

2)  I haven’t seen a ton of Billy’s stuff, but what I have seen is almost always disrespectful, sacrilegious, discriminatory, inappropriate, racist, unkind, profane, rude, obscene, and just overall mean.

3)  I don’t hate anyone except for Satan (although Maher makes me reconsider somewhat…).

4)  I validate people who have concerns with organized religion (or otherwise doctrinally strict life philosophies).  Read more here about this:

5)  I don’t think all atheists are bad people (read more here!).

6)  I VERY MUCH think that Bill Maher is a bad person (and I don’t make comments like that very often!).

7)  I see connections between Bill Maher and the Book of Mormon figure Korihor.

Screen shot 2013-10-10 at 9.16.06 PM

8)  There are public figures who poke fun at Mormonism (and other religious/cultural groups as well) in a way that is NOT unkind or belittling.  Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart are the ones that come to mind at the moment.

Screen shot 2013-10-11 at 9.20.51 PM

9)  If you’re dying for a television fix of a gray-haired man, may I suggest checkin’ out Anderson Cooper?  I am a fan of his stuff. And I even wrote him a lil’ poem!

Screen shot 2013-10-11 at 9.36.07 PM

10)  We may find others’ (religious) beliefs (very) odd, but still we must find the humanity and decency to show some level of respect, even if we do not (fully) agree.

Screen shot 2013-10-11 at 9.50.12 PM

CLOSING THOUGHTS

I’m not worried about (permanent) damage that Mr. Bill Maher will do to the image of the LDS Church (cuz he can’t!).  No way.  We’re here to say.  And he’ll be left to his own sad life.  (Sorry if this is a lil’ mean-spirited).

None will molest them from morn until ev’n.

Screen shot 2013-10-11 at 9.30.53 PM

~Now Let Us Rejoice (LDS Hymn #3)

Still, Billy Boy bugs me so much so that I devoted

(a lot of) time and effort to writing this post.

Come on now, Maher. Change yo wayz a lil’ bit, huh?

BILL MAHER PUTS A SOUR taste in my mouth…

Screen shot 2013-10-11 at 9.38.55 PM

and if I’m gonna have those particular taste-buds activated,

I’d muuuuuch rather it be because of something like this:

Screen shot 2013-10-10 at 9.19.50 PM

🙂

PS.  I understand that his last name does not naturally rhyme with the word “sour;”  I twisted it for a stylistic purpose.   Lots of artists do this kind of thing (slant rhyme is the exact term).  John Mayer does it in his song “You’re No One ’til Someone Lets You Down.”  Check it stat!

proud girl!

PPS.  Not gonna lie, I’m quite proud of this post and its plethora of literary/journalistic/celebrity/religious/historical references.  Go count ’em!

U2 has some excellent, inspiring, rocking, wistful, strong Christian/Biblically themed, romantic, slightly sexy, and overall QUALITY music (duh!).

Lyrics here (these profound words have brought me closer to Christ.  TRULY!)

Quick Hiatus

Dear Readers,

Katherine will possibly be taking a few days off from posting new stuff (although we’ll see how long it lasts).  Please believe me when I say it is NOT due to a lack of inspiration (I have so much I can barely keep up!).  It’s due to a lack of clean laundry, a need to do some stuff behind the scenes of my blog, and a strong desire to tackle other areas of my life which have suffered some neglect.  But as surely as you are reading this right now, I WILL BE BACK.  Thanks so much for reading, hope ya’ll have a wonderful few days, and now go call your mother or clean the lint out of your belly button or pay your bills or something

Love always, Katherine Anne

Divine Organism

A few years back, a stupid 90s pop song suggested that the human race was merely mating mammals likened unto primates on a popular scientific television program.  Um, that’s pretty ridiculous, if you ask Kath.  Check it out:

Plus there are WAAAAAY better episodes to discover by clicking our channel changer to something else…

And now I would like to share a poem from a few years ago (I wrote it for extra credit for Biology 100 at BYU).  It is not exactly related, but it still speaks of these ideas of science/God/creation, et cetera.  Again, I’m no scientist (and don’t pretend to be!).  But I like to try to explore the ideas of reconciliation of seemingly opposing truths (over which theologians, experts, and philosophers have fought for centuries!).  HERE IT IS!

Creation or evolution?

What’s the solution?

Did God make man?

Or is it from apes we began?

Some thump their Bibles, saying evolution is libel

Some their microscopes claiming God is a hoax…

Creation or Evolution?

What’s the solution?

In this time of scientific and religious growth,

maybe the answer is BOTH!

What didjaylthink?  Again, I don’t pretend to be an expert (but check out more about Mormon scientist Henry Eyring here!) and I CERTAINLY don’t pretend to be the only person who thinks creation and evolution do not need to be mutually exclusive (line of propriety YET AGAIN!).

But seriously that poem is pretty awesome 🙂

(read it again and ponder every. single. word.)

And now a beautiful song from a band that has had on an indelible influence on not only music, not only the world, but also on Katherine!

Lyrics here

(the title is phrase-twisting Mr. Chuck 🙂 Darwin’s famous piece…)

charles-darwin-320x240

There is obviously a lot more to say about these ideas (and you better believe I have more to write!), but this much will suffice for today.

mormon-temple-room

This is a picture from an LDS temple, where we learn more about how divine (of organisms) we really are.

(and I’m allowed to show this pic in case you are wondering!)

Readers:  What are YOUR thoughts on evolution,

science, God, creation, etc.?

If you are unkind to other people…

I won’t hate you,

but I DEFINITELY won’t date you.

Read more here about why being kind is so important to me.

“Kindness begins with me.”

Go listen to Natasha’s song that I mentioned (I have done my own version and might include it some day)

Then rejuvenate your cells with some nice shut-eye (SLEEP!).

“Stay safe tonight…”

“Am I wearing too many colors?”

I love colors.  And I love dressing to IMpress, as well as EXpress.

Image

But I want people to see and remember not just my clothes, but also ME and my natural beauty (enhanced a little with makeup and occasionally fake lashes).  And when you wear a lot of bright things that stand out, there can be too many things to look at.  So maybe if I wanna wear a bright color, I should just stick to one.
