Though I rarely (if ever) use profanity, a certain Halloween costume is a BITCH!

I’ll let the video speak for itself:

Regina George may think people can wear whatever they want on October 31st.

ImageBut Katherine Anne does NOT!

There are many beautiful, wonderful things in life in which to find humor & joy.

The Holocaust is NOT one of them.

If you agree with me (and you should!), please spread this message/post anyway that you can.

Oh, also I read a book by the German LDS General Authority F. Enzio Busche.

It changed my life.

Must write about it soon.  Until then, here’s a wonderful video by him:

But back to costumes (bookending again!),

here is one of my personal favorites of my own:

Strong women are hot, ya’ll.

Click here for some of my other Halloween hits (literally!) and misses…

And speaking of, if somebody’s costume offends you,

don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself.

Take a tip from my friend (pictured above!) Rosie (the Riveter).

And to sum up in one brilliant phrase my beliefs on costumes,

allow me to quote from THE greatest playwright of all time.

“There is much truth in jest (for good and for bad)”

~William Shakespeare

Now it’s time for a little text-to-self connection (my favorite part!):

Righteous Readers: what do your Halloween Costumes say about you (for good and for bad)?

PS.  If you think the fact that there is a Picture of a Pumpkin on this Post (about Halloween!) is a coincidence, THINK AGAIN.

My present to you for making it to the 400th post? RAP VIDEO!

No beatin’ around the bush on that title (figuratively OR literally)!  I had my NEW friend Kemp and my OLD friend Carlos help me out.  Check it stat (and please excuse my being a little dance happy.  I’m not as smooth/subtle as my friends):

And if you think that was entertaining (probably mainly because Katherine was making a fool of herself), it actually wasn’t anything compared to what these guys can do for real.  Here’s just a taste of their INSANE TALENT.  And yes Mom, the following is improvised.

Here’s Carlos’s youtube channel.

And here’s Kemp’s twitter.

Oh, and just had to include this one too:

Sometimes when you mess up in front of millions of people…

(0:00-1:00)

you just keep going….

(just watch it…)

and people think you are even MORE AWESOME than before!

According to the Love Languages book, I am a “babbling brook,”

Image

so I think all I need is a “dead sea” who reads my blog, talks but not too much, is incredibly rich and successful, has great bone structure and deep-enthralling eyes, lives the gospel of Jesus Christ, has never had any sort of problem/trial/baggage whatsoever, and thinks I’m beautiful.  Now that’s not asking too much is it?  🙂

Oh, except I have learned to have a reservoir, to keep my mouth shut at times, to not always say what’s on my mind.  Still, I like to talk 🙂

My (near perfect) approach to satire…

Screen shot 2014-06-03 at 11.17.26 PMscreen-shot-2013-09-18-at-11-58-04-pm

When it comes to our world and its issues, there is a lot to say!

… And a lot to criticize

There are absolutely times when it’s important to speak plainly and even harshly.  To reprove with sharpness (Doctrine and Covenants 121:43) , and to not beat around the bush (From what I understand, my grandfather Ernest Wilkinson often preferred this approach.).

So I occasionally will speak harshly (but still intelligently!) about subjects, but my passion does not overrule my logic (and vice versa).

Here are 2 of my strongest examples yet:

1)  Some Mansions

2)  Halloween Costume from Hell

And there are certain topics that Katherine simply will not explore in a comedic way (humor is great, but out of bounds can be dangerous, obscene, and grossly offensive).

You will never see any joke on my blog about racism, abuse, pornography, or violence.

And it is NOT that I am afraid of alienating readers (although I do seek to maintain them!).  It is that those jokes are not a part of my life AT ALL, and therefore most certainly will not be part of my blog.

However, when it comes to less serious (but still important!) issues like modesty, time spent on Facebook, and dating, things that are relevant to many people but are especially present in my psyche as a Mormon living in Provo, I like to (try to) be  funny!  I often think deeply about the issue (let it cook in the crock-pot of my mind for a while), but usually say very little.  It’s that whole “economy of words” things again.

Sure I know how to write 15 page papers, but in this case, I think that often the less said, the better.  Brevity IS the soul of wit, ya’ll! As long as what you are saying is funny, uplifting, entertaining, honest, but still speaks an important truth and sparks discussion and thought, I believe that often the point gets across most clearly and perfectly.  The idea of “truth in jest” shows up in almost all of my posts, and it is the core of my approach to satire.

(2 Shakespeare references in 1 paragraph-not bad!)

Two of my greatest influences in this respect are Ellen DeGeneres and Brad Paisley.  Both are brilliant comedians and satirists (Brad is also extremely good looking and could shred a guitar to pieces), but are NOT preachy or unkind.  They respect the intelligence of their audience.  And I believe this is what makes them so good.  Check out these two examples:

Well done, you two.  Well done.  Thanks so much for your inspiration.

And now back to the woman of the hour…

Screen shot 2013-09-01 at 9.30.44 AM

My satire may not be perfect, but it is funny, witty, occasionally sexy, intelligent, clean, refreshing, and overall pretty darn awesome, if I do say so myself.

🙂

That weird writer neighbor

Image  Screen shot 2013-08-04 at 11.13.56 AM

You know how in “The Princess Diaries” Mia has that weird writer neighbor?  He has no social skills and he’s always really nervous and awkward and half the time he’s in his pajamas and probably won’t ever get married.  He’s so sure that he’s on the verge of greatness, but in actuality will never make any money.  Yep, that’s me.

My fashion sense has really taken a hit these days…

Image

And not a good hit.  A bad hit.  (This is Katherine attempting a sports connection.  Really don’t know much about sports, but if I’m gonna get that Webby, I need to appeal to a larger demographic, so I need to diversify my topics.)   ANYWAYS, yes my cute clothes have been kinda neglected lately.  Yesterday, for example, I wore a pink swimsuit cover-up, modified only by the addition of a blue hoodie when I had a man come over at night.  Can’t have anyone lusting over my bare shoulders now!  And 2 days ago I wore yoga pants to a date.  Add to that I spilled sauce onto my shirt.  Also my hair dryer hasn’t been used in about 3 weeks!  Good thing I have church in a few hours so I can clean myself up just a LITTLE (paradox).  And yes, this blog post was just a stealthful way to express that even though I’m not the dress-size I was a year ago, when it comes to the men, this girl’s still got it!

Shout out to my boy Neil!

Image

Just another shout out to this amazing human being, Neil Pasricha, author of the Webby-award winning blog 1000 awesome things.  Thanks for inspiring me, giving me hope and confidence, and also being a HUGE PART of the creation of this blog!

Hey Mr. PASRICHA, did you see my post about a PASHMINA scarf?  See what I did there?

Seriously though, Neil, come on out to Salt Lake.  Bring your girlfriend with you.  We’ll have a swell time.  And I’m sure with the dough you’re rolling in you can afford to take me out to eat.  Think of the traffic it would do to BOTH our blogs!  And this ain’t no truth in jest invitation.  This is….dead serious 🙂

Sounds like a new Nike ad slogan or something, huh?  Big bucks are coming my way! Truth in jest.  If you’re real nice to me, maybe I’ll share. Dead Serious.

Ambivalent feelings toward fame and recognition

is a theme that good artists often explore.  As I see myself becoming a famous writer in the future (truth in jest), I imagine I will have to give this idea some thought.  Haha, but whether or not I ever get a single hit again, I find this a fascinating topic.  So for now, let’s just hear what Miss Natasha has to say about it.  And it’s hard for lyrics to stand out when they’re all good, but here are some notable ones:

“thirsty in a desert with a bag full of gold,

what I thought was precious was just a pile of stones”

Read ALL the lyrics here.

A phrase I’ve said to people more than once in the past week…

*Pacing myself, people.

*Don’t get your hopes up or put all your eggs in one basket, but this is America-DREAM BIG!

*fine line between arrogance and confidence, doing the best I can…

*and no, still haven’t been paid anything……YET (looking into that)

Enough detail to be vulnerable, refreshing, and honest…..

but not enough to be inappropriate, vulgar, or insensitive.  That is my approach when it comes to this blog.  And to my life.  That is one of the reasons that I love (and hate) that little HBO show that shall be not be named.  That is (one of the reasons) why pornography is terrible (random tangent but true none-the-less).  That is how I strive to be.  It can be a fine line to walk,   Image

and all I can do is my very best.  I know I speak the truth on here, but I also know what to put in, and what to leave out, both about my life and others’. Remember, part of the 3 fold description of this blog is “human.”  That’s what I’m going for here, folks….I’m not afraid to put a hideous picture of myself on this blog (and there are plenty, aren’t there?)  Just so long as I can put pretty pictures up too.  According to Pinterest, Marilyn Monroe said that your clothes should be tight enough to show you’re a woman, but loose enough to show you’re a lady.

I want my blog to show that I’m a woman, and a lady.  And a Mormon.  The sum total of my experiences and beliefs make up Katherine.  I wish to celebrate the diversity of my identity and experience.  And in my 25 years, I’ve found that to be one of the trademarks of a great writer.  Now, I may not be the next Willa Cather (we got the whole Kath/Cath thing going on, though)  but believe it or not, I do put some time/ effort/ energy/ prayers/ tears/ laughter/ love into this lil’ blog.  In the end though, please simply disregard everything I’ve written previously because it all really just comes down to that Webby and what I think voters are looking for 🙂

Taylor Jealousy….

I am a better singer than Taylor Swift (whom I absolutely ADORE by the way), and my guitar skills are prob about the same if not better.  Other than the whole song-writing thing (I merely dabble while girlfriend churns out hit after hit), why am I not selling out world tours?  Taylor rocks it to millions……..
