Katherine’s Philosophy of Composition (Another Poem)

Edgar Allan Poe wrote an essay called “The Philosophy of Composition.” I wrote a poem detailing my own PoC:

Draw from your influences, but never imitate
Instead, let your inspirations help you create
You don’t have to be earth-shatteringly original
But take it a step beyond what’s traditional

Art for art’s sake is boring and pretentious,
but pure propaganda is pushy and horrendous
No matter what you choose as your expressive medium
Take deliberate advantage of your rhythm and freedom

Make it about more than just you
But like Polonius says, “To thine own self be true.
And above all else, use your own style
YOU are the artist, make something worthwhile 🙂

What is YOUR Philosophy of Composition?
