What are you doing for someone else?

Screen shot 2014-11-05 at 11.03.59 PM

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'”
-Martin Luther King Jr.
..
“Have I do any good in the world today? Have I helped anyone in need?”
-Hymn #223

‘Service to others is the rent you pay for living on the earth.”
-Muhammed Ali

“Where much is given, much is required.”
-Doctrine & Covenants 82:3 (Uncle Ben totally ripped this off!)

How are YOU giving back?
What are you doing for others?

(we were born to serve…)

PS: For my friends who may not know, the man on the top left is Gail Halvorsen, aka the Candy Bomber. He helped boost morale by dropping candy for children in West Berlin, Germany, using small parachutes. This occurred during the massive conveyance of food and supplies into war-torn West Berlin, known as the Berlin Airlift. Gail is featured on “Meet the Mormons,” and you better believe I bawled during his segment!

PPS: Please don’t think I’m self-serving by including that picture of me getting my shovel on. Also, I know that not every act of service is a tangible project; sometimes it’s just lending a listening ear or helping someone in your family.

This señorita got a treat to translate Spanish!

Screen shot 2014-01-19 at 4.33.44 PMScreen shot 2014-01-19 at 4.36.15 PM

Today I translated for a Mexican woman in my ward who speaks only minimal English. I didn’t serve a Spanish-speaking mission (I didn’t serve a full-time mission at all, actually), but I have taken several advanced Spanish courses at BYU and lived for a summer in El Salvador. My translation certainly was not perfect, but overall it was a pretty awesome experience! It requires a lot of active thinking and engagement with the lesson to translate. And like anything worthwhile in life, you definitely can’t be afraid to make a mistake because you inevitably will. Totez wanna do it again if there is a need. ¡Qué bien!

I think it’s time for you,

Imageto get off the computer for a little bit!  Go for a walk, go do a load of laundry, go volunteer at a nursing home, go call your sister, go read your scriptures, go plan your week.  And the list goes on, and on.

Seriously folks, we are TOO ONLINE these days!  I very much appreciate that you read my blog, but the OUTERnet can be even better than the INTERnet.

Lyrics here

I love this song of Mr. Paisley‘s.

It is a PERFECT satire of this social problem

(although there is the teensiest bit of mild lyrical innuendo)

And Elder David A Bednar of the LDS Church warns of this ubiquitous problem

of assuming fake identities on the internet.

CLICK HERE for that talk (and my sweet thoughts on it) that is insanely awesome

But back to Ms. Wilkinson’s main point (bookending!)

Screen shot 2013-09-16 at 9.32.46 AM

I love you all (platonically and literally),

but right now I think it would be oh! so wise

to go attend to the matters of real life, know what I mean?

So now skedaddle!  GO DO SOMETHING!

But I’ll see ya back here eventually, right?

I just met a girl named Maria

Screen shot 2013-08-18 at 1.32.19 AM            Screen shot 2013-08-18 at 1.31.25 AM

Maria is a friend from my Mormon Singles Ward.  She is always finding ways to serve other people, expressing her testimony of Jesus Christ, AND making us all laugh.  One specific thing I appreciate about Maria is that she is very aware of job opportunities and uses our ward Facebook page to post them for anyone who might be interested or looking.  Way to bear one another’s burdens (of unemployment).  Love you, sweet girl.

PS.  Plus she got to meet Elder Holland.  Lucky duck!

And holy freakin’ cow, does she embody it!  Her money is TOTEZ where her mouth is…

Even I can’t find the words to express how I feel about this girl.

Help me out, Natasha:

Can’t think of a better way.  That’s all I have to say.  I love you!

PS.  In case you’re wanting some sort of count, she’s been to Uganda (TWICE!), the Phillippines, Fiji, France, and probably a million other places I don’t even know about.  Jet-lagged much?
