Sometimes when you mess up in front of millions of people…

(0:00-1:00)

you just keep going….

(just watch it…)

and people think you are even MORE AWESOME than before!

Good to know for future reference…just kidding 😉

I want to shout it from the rooftop, climb on a mountaintop baby, scream and shout!

I LOVE THIS BLOG SO MUCH!  I want to shout it from the rooftops.  And yes, it does come up in conversations.  But I also don’t want to shove it down anyone’s throat, make it feel like I’m trying to sell something, or hog the conversation.

But the thing is, when it DOES come up, it’s helping me network, help my friends and neighbors with job opportunities, gets me in touch with other musicians and writers, improving my relationships, share what is important to me, learn more about photography/graphics, and overall is making me very VERY happy.

Thunderbolt of blasphemy?  You bet.

And again, no money directly from this blog yet (but indirectly yes!), so it’s highly possible that I am grossly over-estimating any influence I may or may not have.   Oh, and this post just wouldn’t be complete without a little Taylor:

Joanna Brooks (half) smiles at her own stuff!

And yes, I’ve read it.  Mixed feelings.  Will blog about it soon eventually.

I’m sorry that I’m flooding your inbox.  I know you get an email every time I post, and at this point, I am writing between 15-30 new posts per day.  I think it will slow down eventually, but if you continue to follow me (and please do!!!), know that there will always be notifications.  🙂

I’ll drink to that (my glass is empty so fill it up with something…non-alcoholic please!) AND make a toast to my readers!  Thank you so, so, SO much.  And believe it or not, I still have lots to write about.  Live your own lives and tell your own experiences, of course, but still mosey on over when you can, okay?

Read Lyrics Here:

Oh, and I copied Rihanna’s look once upon a time, remember?

P.S.  All those numbers add up to just over 5,000.  I promise.  And no, I didn’t add them myself.  And no I didn’t keep clicking my stats button waiting to get to that magic landmark.  🙂

Post-it Notes….

I love post-it notes (also known colloquially as stickies)!

1)  Literal:

Screen shot 2013-08-04 at 9.43.52 PM

They are good for leaving notes on people’s cars or writing to your visiting-teachees.

2)  Figurative:

Screen shot 2013-08-04 at 9.34.12 PM

You better believe this blog would not/could not exist without my beloved post-its/stickies.

But whatever  you do, DO NOT break up with me on one!

(And whatever you do, DO NOT judge me for loving/posting these videos.)

If you do, I will have this reaction to my friends.

Then will have a melt down.

Not my primary purposes, but I ain’t gonna say “no”!

To be clear, revenue (in the works) and missionary experiences (CURRently ocCURRing) are not my primary purposes in the conception, genesis, and raising of this blog’s life.  However, as those opportunities come knocking on my door, who am I to turn them away? 🙂

Shout out to my boy Neil!

Image

Just another shout out to this amazing human being, Neil Pasricha, author of the Webby-award winning blog 1000 awesome things.  Thanks for inspiring me, giving me hope and confidence, and also being a HUGE PART of the creation of this blog!

Hey Mr. PASRICHA, did you see my post about a PASHMINA scarf?  See what I did there?

Seriously though, Neil, come on out to Salt Lake.  Bring your girlfriend with you.  We’ll have a swell time.  And I’m sure with the dough you’re rolling in you can afford to take me out to eat.  Think of the traffic it would do to BOTH our blogs!  And this ain’t no truth in jest invitation.  This is….dead serious 🙂

“You’re always quoting songs!”

Screen shot 2013-08-16 at 5.27.13 PM

If I had a nickel for every time I heard this phrase (or something along those lines), I wouldn’t even care about the fortune I plan on making from this blog 🙂  No but seriously, I’ve given this idea some real thought.  And here’s what I’ve come up with:  I do not mean to be a walking song.  I can see how my near constant lyrical references could come off as being trite or cliche, not to mention potentially annoying.  It’s just that if someone has already found the words that perfectly express what you are feeling, why would you try to find new ones?  Economy of thought, people!  Plus you can still be creative and original by borrowing art.  Moulin Rouge, anyone?

BUT I JUST CAN’T STOP!  Faith has a short-shelf life, but so does inspiration.  It’s not a manic energy though, it’s just excitement and clarity.  Must only stop writing for the bare necessities (showers are up for debate).  And this kind of writer’s high is rare indeed.  Better take it and run with it.  Who knows how long I can go before I burn out?  Renae, you DO know he mentions Peachtree, right? 🙂

Controversy can overshadow talent and achievement….

There are SOOOO many examples of this, but here are just a few:

Image

1)  Kanye West- (um, Taylor Swift incident, anyone?)

2)  Eminem (If CNN has a top 10, that’s pretty bad Marshall)

3)  John Mayer (You know I love you Johnny, but don’t be spilling your secrets about women! Plus, chastity is where it’s at, anyways.)

And countless, countless others.  These people are often UNBELIEVABLY GIFTED, but when they get brought up in conversation, unfortunately that all often just gets forgotten because of mistakes they’ve made.

Just one more reason to keep my clothes modest.  That and I haven’t hit the gym in a while.

PS.  I do believe in repentance and redemption.  I do.

Turkey Trimmings

People I swear I go outside these days.  I do take showers (once a month is normal, right?), eat, sleep, hang out with others.  But yes, it is true that I also have been WAAAAAY into my blog lately.  No denying that.  Don’t be hatin’!  Anyways, so far I’ve had about 50 views from Turkey.  TURKEY!  Never been there.  But my brother and sister-in-law DID bring me this Pashmina scarf from there a few years ago (that’s what happens when your brother is a doctor and you are not).  Just wanted to share.

“I will stand as a WITNESS of God at all times, and in all things, and in all places.”

Screen shot 2013-08-03 at 11.20.58 AM

This was a significant part of the theme I would state every Sunday in Young Women’s.  It comes from this passage in the Book of Mormon.

I am not an official spokesperson or representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  (But check out more about Michael Otterson here-he’s one of my absolute faves!)  But I still do believe it is important (AND GREATLY DESIRE!) to stand as a witness of God, even, and especially when it comes to this blog.

Now I am not perfect by any stretch.

Screen shot 2013-09-02 at 4.05.18 PM

Yes!  (hard to believe I know…)

Screen shot 2013-09-02 at 4.07.21 PM

(“um,” I will continue, thanks John…)

And is there sometimes a bit of possible tension between my 3 fold identity of Mormon, woman, and human?

Absolutely.

But has there ever been a clash that I believe could hurt the image of the Church or cause major confusion?

No.

And if there ever was, I don’t believe I would expose it, at least not completely.

Plus it’s not like I’m super famous anyways so even if I did I’m not sure anyone would care.  🙂

I’m only one voice in a million, but you ain’t takin’ that from me!

Screen shot 2013-09-02 at 4.19.06 PM

(in case you are too lazy/prideful to click on that above link,

it is from this waving woman…)

ANYWAYS, just wanted to express that I am conscious of the fact that this blog in some small way represents not only myself, not only my family, not only my friends, not only the LDS Church, but also Christ himself.

Is that blasphemous or arrogant?  No way, Jose.  Peace out!

PS.  I’d give my bangs (first picture!) a B+ that day.

Screen shot 2013-08-03 at 9.51.48 AM

but not enough to make it inappropriate or uncomfortable.

Screen shot 2013-08-03 at 9.52.26 AM

I am Mormon, woman, and human, and the order of those 3 things sometimes changes.  And I want to be honest but not obscene.  There is nothing on this blog that I wouldn’t want an employer to see.  Or my mom.  There is nothing that I believe could compromise my temple recommend.  And still I bare my soul.  But it seems to be working out okay because I keep getting more and more followers 🙂

Not as bad as it sounds…

jesus-christ_dDpJM_1359374588

I have compared this blog to Christ.  That may sound a bit sacriligious, but just a minute, let me explain before you excommunicate me.  First of all, my discovery of identity (as articulated in my core beliefs) does not replace my faith.  It merely enhances and diversifies my character.  So yes I still believe in the literal Christ.  However, this blog has given me freedom, expression, joy, and immortality. And it helped rescue me from a dark place.  Does that not sound like Christ?  So I think I’m safe from the thunderbolts of blasphemy 🙂

There are worse things to have take over your life….

than a blog.  Especially when you’re not married, don’t have kids, and are not fully employed (but I got a job yesterday!  will write about it soon).  And this blog is actually helping me make connections and also is allowing me to encourage others to awaken their dormant talents as well!  So any haters out there in cyber-space who think I’m a little TOO blog happy, here’s what I have to say:

Coulda been the other version, huh? 🙂

Mormon Pogo!

On Sunday, my home-teachers Dan and Todd came over to give me a little lesson.  These guys are both attractive, hard-working, and successful.  They also love God.  So the lesson went great, but the REAL party started after when we pulled out the pogo-stick!

Image                Image

Mormons don’t just go to church for 3 hours every Sunday, people.  We do stuff like this.  Join the church and I will buy you a pogo-stick for your baptism.  And you’ll just have to keep coming back to my blog to wait for a picture of me doing the pogo-stick 🙂

“I’m a gerbil on a treadmill, and everyone else has crossed the finish line.”

I used this phrase more than once in the not too recent past to express how I felt I was doing in life (“mixed metaphors” are a tool that Shakespeare often used and Katherine occasionally experiments with).  You know, all the things we’re supposed to accomplish?  Career, marriage, family, not crashing your car, stuff like that.  It seemed like so many people around me were doing all those things, and I was just praying that I didn’t forget to pay my utility bill!  But I’ve since re-examined that phrase.  The thing is, gerbils are really cute, I am one of those rare people who enjoy treadmills and even got one for my 15th birthday, and I actually have crossed a finish line or two.

Plus, isn’t the joy in the journey anyways?

about people with pictures (particularly FB profile pictures) of themselves with children that are not directly their own (like a niece or nephew).  We want people to think we love them (which we do!), but really we just think we look super hot and want others to see and think we are good with kids and stuff.  Ain’t pointing any fingers.  I do it too!  Now I love my little twin nieces. But come on now, you know who this picture is really about 🙂
