Mormon women posing nude?! Come on ya’ll, that’s super crude!

ImageImage Katrina Barker Anderson Mormon nude

There is a new photography collection by artist Katrina Barker Anderson of Mormon women posing nude (google at your own risk, which some of you will because you’re pervs).  It’s done in the name of the women reclaiming themselves from a culture of shame about their bodies.  Come on, ya’ll.  I know you have good intentions, but that is ridiculous.  Posing NAKED?!  How are your children gonna feel knowing there are naked pictures of their mothers online? (hint: super awkward).  Listen, the female body is beautiful and divine.  Yes, throughout history there has been shaming of women’s bodies and sexuality.  These types of behaviors and attitudes are unacceptable.  But that does NOT mean ya gotta show us all you got!  Because it’s sacred, keep it covered (except for yourself and for your husband, who will totally love it!).  Not because it’s ugly or shameful, but because it’s personal!  Goolly, this REALLY is inappropriate (understatement).  Go on and say I’m judgmental if you’d like.  Some of you undoubtedly will, and that’s ok.  But an exhibit of Mormon women posing naked?  No way, Jose.  I’m not saying it’s pornography, but I AM saying that it’s extremely inappropriate.

Oh, and if any men deem this collection to be wrong, the artist and her models will cry of oppressive patriarchy.  So take it from a fellow Mormon woman:

                            PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!

And when in recent history has something good coming of posing nude? Pretty much NEVER.  Some of you might say, “but it’s art!”  That’s a slippery slope, and I really believe we’d all do well to avoid it.  Taking naked pictures of yourself is never a good idea, ESPECIALLY in our digital age.

Image

You can be pretty and feminine and STILL keep your clothes on.  I am living proof of that 🙂

(hope that doesn’t sound too terribly cocky!)

Mormon women posing nude?

Come on ya’ll, that’s SUPER crude!

Oh, and even if you don’t believe in God/ religion/ Mormonism, you should know that Quentin Cook graduated summa cum laude from Stanford Law, so it’s 99.9% guaranteed that he’s smarter than you.

No offense.

Shakespeare said it best:

Image“There is much truth in jest!”

ImageI love, love LOVE this quote and have been using it almost ad nauseum since I first heard it about 10 years ago.  It basically means that although our jokes aren’t meant to be taken completely seriously, they still reveal a lot of truth about us as they show what we value and believe.  For example, a person who jokes about being fat probably actually feels that way (at least somewhat) about him/herself.  Likewise, people who make jokes (though perhaps lighthearted in tone) about the fiasco involving the website of the Affordable Care Act (as hosts Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley recently just did on the CMAs), are making some kind of a statement against it.

I LOVE jokes, I LOVE humor, and I LOVE wordplay.  But not everything in our world is worthy of being included in our jokes.  I personally will NEVER make a joke that hints of racism, abuse, discrimination, or pornography even in the slightest (read more here!).  We must be careful to not cross that line of propriety, and use humor wisely and tactfully.

Text-to-self Connection:

1.  What kind of things do you like to find humor in?  Why?

2.  What sorts of topics are off-limits for jokes?  Why?

Bourne Ultimatum? I wish we could make it the PORN Ultimatum!

Some mansions…

Imageare better than others.

Hugh Hefner is not a hero.  He is a ZERO.  He is not someone to be admired.  He is a sad, ugly old man who has made millions from an industry that has destroyed relationships, lives, jobs, freedom, confidence, health, and happiness.  Total loser, if you ask me.

Image

Plus, his red plush robe only makes him look more like the devil,

AND emphasizes his blood-shot eyes and blotchy complexion.

And ya’ll know how much I love free speech, but don’t even try to go there with me on this one because I will PULVERIZE every claim you make.  That’s how good I am 🙂  And that’s how bad pornography is.  So let’s hear what real men think of it:

Don’t care about/believe in religion/God/prophets?  This guy doesn’t talk about it:

And neither does this girl:

Pornography is terrible in every way possible!  It’s not sexy.  It’s not hot.  It causes abuse.  It degrades something sacred.  It it highly linked to drug use, depression, crime, and other problems.  Bourne Ultimatum?  I wish we could make it the PORN Ultimatum!  But until then, we just have to try our very best to control ourselves and keep this trash out of our lives in every way possible.  Sound good?  Peeeeeerfect.

🙂

But back to mansions (bookending!),

if we Stay out of the Smut that Satan Spreads,

we can party it up at this one!

In my Father’s House are many mansions... I go to prepare a place for you.

(and for further reading, I also write about chastity/purity/sex/temples here)

PS.  Think I’ve covered all my bases, ya’ll.  And I don’t even play sports.

PPS.  If you are involved in pornography, there is hope, both professional and spiritual.  Keep fightin’

PPPS.  Even Mr. Hefner could repent through the Atonement.

Let’s STRIP away the idea that strip-clubs are cool (because they are TERRIBLE!)

Screen shot 2013-09-23 at 9.45.42 PM

The disgusting phenomenon known as “strip clubs” is a sad and embarrassing part of our society.  As is often portrayed in pop culture, “men” will go to these kinds of clubs (why they are sometimes referred to as “Gentlemen’s Clubs” is beyond me!) soon before they get married, or even for no specific occasion at all.  For some reason which I will never fully understand, it seems fun and harmless to casually objectify women.  Sadly, sometimes women themselves  contribute to this false idea; some think they will be more appealing and sexy if they fulfill some sick fantasy.  Ew!  Totez gross!  Be a lady!  And the guys need to be real men (just like Elder Christofferson talked about in this post)!  So now howzabout you let me set the record straight on what should REALLY happen on the dance floor.

Hint: it’s classy, clean, AND still lets me bust a move.

(safe for all eyes and ears OF COURSE!)

Truths to Consider:

1)  Most girls/women who work in strip-clubs have been abused and are very unhappy (more to come on this idea in another post).

2)  Most boys/men who patronize strip-clubs are lonely, desperate, insecure, and unhappy as well.

3)  God intended for us to be sexual, but within the realm of a committed, marital relationship (read more about this here), and certainly not in some stuffy, crowded shack of sin that smells like stale armpits and halitosis.

(this sentence will be repeated in this post, FYI).

4) Miley Cyrus has sooooo very much to learn.

5)  Playboy King Hugh Hefner is a TOTAL loser!

So what is to be done?  Thankfully, all is not lost.  There are inspired leaders (ancient and modern) who have given us counsel and truth concerning these issues.  Here are just a few insights that will bring us safety and happiness if we heed them:

Screen shot 2013-09-24 at 12.02.55 AM

Dancing can be fun and can provide an opportunity to meet new people.  When dancing, avoid full body contact with your partner. Do not use positions or moves that are suggestive of sexual or violent behavior or are otherwise inappropriate….Attend only those dances where dress, grooming, lighting, lyrics, music, and entertainment contribute to a wholesome atmosphere where the Spirit may be present.

And once again, lemme show you a girl who can dance

and have a good time while still keeping things clean:

dancing queen

And ya’ll, this may or may not apply to you, but just so you know,

any man who engages in any sort of these behaviors

doesn’t stand a CHANCE with me!

So keep it clean, and maybe we can get to know each other.

🙂

And now let me give you a nice, take-away quote (the one I said I’d repeat!):

In conclusion, let me utilize the megaphone pic of the ever lovely Ms. Bedingfield (she can move and still be a lady!) to express something that I really just wanna shout to the world:

Don’t glamorize what is ugly in reality…

 STRIP CLUBS STINK!
.

*if you wanna pass this message/post along, I wouldn’t object…

PS.  This is not a judgment on women who work in the industry, especially because so many of them are coerced or have a terrible background story.  Don’t call me judgmental, ok?  That’s not what this is about.  We’re all children of God, but sin is sin, and I’m not afraid to call it that…

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem”

~Luke 13:34

As you can probably guess, I had an internal struggle of whether or not I wanted to include a picture of this “book.”  But the juxtaposition is powerful enough that I feel it is justified.

Men, women, and children all over the world experience sexual/ emotional/ physical abuse.  And now one of the best selling books in America (and soon to be film) tries to make this stuff look hot?!  I think I just threw up a little bit…

Read more here about my VERY strong feelings concerning “50 shades of disgusting/filth/trash.”

And as is always the case, if you believe what I’m saying, don’t be afraid to PASS THIS ALONG!

Really Awesome Readers!

What does the stuff you read say about you?

For good and for bad?

and since you are what you read,

KathBath knows that you are at least somewhat awesome!

(since you’re reading my blog!)

The gospel of Jesus Christ is for everyone.

Screen shot 2013-08-03 at 10.26.47 PM

It’s not just those crazy stories about porn addict turns temple president  (We ain’t all Saul-to-Paul or Alma the Younger gets a rude awakening). It’s for people like me: Miss Mormon girl to the max, does everything right and keeps all the rules, and life falls apart at 25.  No matter who you are, no matter your situation, you can rise out of the ashes, find meaning, and be happy.  If you’re interested, you can chat with missionaries here.  Or just email/comment if you wanna talk.  Dead serious.

Enough detail to be vulnerable, refreshing, and honest…..

but not enough to be inappropriate, vulgar, or insensitive.  That is my approach when it comes to this blog.  And to my life.  That is one of the reasons that I love (and hate) that little HBO show that shall be not be named.  That is (one of the reasons) why pornography is terrible (random tangent but true none-the-less).  That is how I strive to be.  It can be a fine line to walk,   Image

and all I can do is my very best.  I know I speak the truth on here, but I also know what to put in, and what to leave out, both about my life and others’. Remember, part of the 3 fold description of this blog is “human.”  That’s what I’m going for here, folks….I’m not afraid to put a hideous picture of myself on this blog (and there are plenty, aren’t there?)  Just so long as I can put pretty pictures up too.  According to Pinterest, Marilyn Monroe said that your clothes should be tight enough to show you’re a woman, but loose enough to show you’re a lady.

I want my blog to show that I’m a woman, and a lady.  And a Mormon.  The sum total of my experiences and beliefs make up Katherine.  I wish to celebrate the diversity of my identity and experience.  And in my 25 years, I’ve found that to be one of the trademarks of a great writer.  Now, I may not be the next Willa Cather (we got the whole Kath/Cath thing going on, though)  but believe it or not, I do put some time/ effort/ energy/ prayers/ tears/ laughter/ love into this lil’ blog.  In the end though, please simply disregard everything I’ve written previously because it all really just comes down to that Webby and what I think voters are looking for 🙂

An unexpected metaphor

Screen shot 2013-08-25 at 9.15.11 AM

Warning: I am about to make a comparison between 2 things that are seemingly very different and potentially the slightest bit controversial. But just know that in John Donne’s famous poem, “Batter my Heart,” he compares spiritual conversion to sexual violence.  Mine is no where near that bad, and John Donne has been quoted in Mormon General Conference!  (So now that I’ve established my ethos a bit, onward I go!)  The following subject matter is not offensive, obscene, or inappropriate I believe, but it does concern an adult theme.  But it’s all good cuz I’m not worried about Miss Rosemary or Mr. William reading this just yet 🙂

SEX AND TEMPLES
Many people wonder why only certain people go inside Mormon temples.  There have been feelings of exclusion, privilege, secrecy, and us. vs them.  I was born and raised in the church and I struggled with it.  All through Young Women’s I heard, “you’re gonna get married in the temple.  you are the princess.  you will be so beautiful.  TEMPLE MARRIAGE RULES!”  I felt alone, and I thought I couldn’t ask questions or voice my feelings of nervousness, not wanting to do the whole temple experience, etc.  I didn’t buy the whole “sacred, not secret” thing.  I felt like it wasn’t fair that I would have to commit to something that I didn’t know beforehand.  I didn’t want to wear garments.  But I thought:  I CAN’T TALK ABOUT THIS BECAUSE EVERYONE LOVES THE TEMPLE AND THE TEMPLE IS SO AWESOME, ETC. AND WE DON’T TALK ABOUT THE TEMPLE SPECIFICS..so I lived in silent fear, shame.
As I got older I began to understand that it was okay to ask questions, be nervous, have doubts, and my anxiety began to lessen.

Screen shot 2013-09-29 at 7.14.26 PM
2 years ago a Christian friend visited me in Provo.  He asked me questions about the church.  I don’t know if he wanted to join, but he wasn’t antagonistic or trying to prove me wrong or anything.  We walked on temple grounds.  He loved it and took lots of pictures (he was a photographer).  He asked me why only Mormons could go in…..the sometimes dreaded question.  (though again he was earnestly asking; not offended or being antagonistic).  In that moment I had a thought come to my mind that was definitely not my own (at least not completely).  TEMPLES ARE LIKE SEX.  Let’s talk about sex first because that’s the one everyone is interested in.

Screen shot 2013-09-29 at 7.09.39 PM

In Christianity, God says sex is only between 2 people who are married.  It is natural.  It is good.  It is beautiful.  But when you take sex and put it all over the internet or the magazines or the songs, when you pervert and abuse it, it is wrong, it is offensive, sinful, shameful….ETC…when a couple is married, they have sex!  It is not a secret, not shameful or sinful.  And yet it’s not really appropriate to discuss the details with others.  Sex is for people who are commited, responsible, and mature enough to handle it.  To the wrong eyes and in the wrong contexts, it is wrong, but within marriage, it is right.
Screen shot 2013-09-29 at 7.15.54 PM

The temple is like this too!  It is for people who are committed, responsible, and mature enough to handle it.  To the wrong eyes and in the wrong contexts, it is wrong, but within the appropriate boundaries, it is right and awesome and wonderful.  Might be kinda weird the first time or two (like sex), but it grows more meaningful over time.  What goes on is not shameful, but we don’t talk about specifics because it is sacred.

Screen shot 2013-09-29 at 7.10.53 PM

Screen shot 2013-09-29 at 7.12.22 PM

By the way, it must be clarified that there is NOTHING SEXUAL ABOUT THE TEMPLE EXPERIENCE.#ain’t no kinky ceremonies  #just waiting for a thunderbolt for that blasphemy

Since my first time explaining this to my friend, I have used it in certain conversations with about 15 people-Mormon/not Mormon, endowed/not endowed.  And it has gone over REALLY WELL!  They get it.  And by the way, I feel good about knowing when is an appropriate time and place to share this.  Not something I’m gonna say over the pulpit, know what I mean?

I am a virgin in both respects.  Hopefully when my time comes around, it will be rocking, in both respects.  #toomuchinformation?   #idon’tcare

CLOSING THOUGHTS

1)  I invite all people to learn about the LDS temple, and if they choose, to prepare themselves to receive the blessings associated with it.

2)  Similarly, I strongly encourage all people to practice the principle of chastity in keeping with the laws of the Lord.

“What I am, and what I would are as secret as maidenhood.

To your ears, divinity.  To any others, profanation.”

~Viola (from William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”)

PS.  Dear friends/readers, I kindly remind you that if you ever have questions about anything at all, you can always email me (katherineannewilkinson@gmail.com).  I wish to emphasis that I do not believe in bait-and-switching people into any religion or faith (if you think Mormons are cray-cray, it’s okay!), but if you have inquiries, I am a pretty good reliable source I think 🙂
