German Shepherd

President Uchtdorf is a German Shephard!

ImageImage

lemme explain…

Kath’s Main Points:

1)  President Dieter F. Uchtdorf is German.

2)  President U is a shepherd (he leads people to truth).

3)  President U is a German Shepherd!

4)  Gotta be soooo very careful making jokes like this.  I think I’m okay in this case.

5)  I like dogs a lot.

6)  I like wordplay just as much.

7)  Doing black & white videos of yourself makes you look artsy.

8)  Shepherd’s pie is a little too heavy for me.

President Uchtdorf

And yes, I know that’s not a German shepherd, so don’t give me any crap, please.  I considered doing some research to see if I could find one to take a picture with it, but I figured this picture does what I need it to….

Writing’s sweet as frosting,

Image

but it’s also quite exhausting!

Screen shot 2013-11-22 at 11.28.38 PM

So I am just looooving this chance that I have to write.  To express myself and to say things that are valuable and can speak to others.  It’s a gift to have the means, the skills, and the freedom to create as I do.  Often times during the day I am inspired and think of things to write about!  I have to keep it tucked in my mind (or in my notebook) til I can finally get to it.  And I do get to it 🙂  So yes, I love the opportunity to write.

But it takes its toll, too!  Inspiration is often inconvenient.  Like often the best ideas come at really inopportune times (like in the middle of the night).  It’s something many artists deal with.  John Mayer, Natasha Bedingfield, and Taylor Swift to drop some big names.  And it takes energy.  Mental, emotional, physical energy.  Don’t get me wrong, I ain’t complaining!  Not in the least.  Just expressing that truly committing oneself to one’s chosen art form can be pretty tiring.

Writing’s sweet as frosting,

but it’s also quite exhausting!

Little Piece of Heaven

Perusing Sephora!

🙂

Sephora is the Mecca of makeup stores, in case you didn’t know.

Sadly, I can usually only afford 1-2 items per trip (quality ain’t cheap, ya’ll!).  It’s like a diabetic in an ice cream parlor.  Sigh.  But that doesn’t stop me from spending hours there (sometimes literally!) brushing up on the latest colors, styles, and brands.  Oh, and of course sampling a TON of products!   Some might call this vain, worldly, and foolish.  I call it beautiful, creative, and artistic.  After that, I just might tell any haters of my beauty hobby/obsession to go to hell.

Oh, and when I went a few days ago, I heard this classic Natasha song as I was checking out.  Don’t hate that!

Sephora is a little bit of heaven on earth.  Will write more later…

I ain’t comprehensive, but I sure am extensive!

Screen shot 2013-11-28 at 1.18.05 AM

So I don’t write about it all (“it all” being anything and everything going on in my life and in the Universe as a whole).  But I most certainly would if I could!  In the words of Evita, “the physical interferes.”  Like, I gotta eat and shower and go to work and socialize and stuff!  And guess what?  Those seemingly mundane things inspire me all the more!  Good problem to have, but yes, still (somewhat of) a problem.  I am constantly wanting to read, and to write about what I read.  I try my best, but writing this blog isn’t an exact science.  Still, I celebrate what I do write.  And also that I write a lot.  Like, a LOT!  And in case you haven’t noticed, I write about a TON of stuff:  The gospel, John Mayer, my love life (or lack, thereof), Natasha Bedingfield, social issues, Charles Dickens, and John Mayer again.  And those are just a few;   you see, the list is never ending!  A never-ending story.  Variety is my middle name!  Not really, but it might be as well be!  Katherine Anne Variety Wilkinson.  Got a nice ring to it, dontcha think?

My blog ain’t comprehensive

but it sure is extensive!

Badge

I just got a Facebook Badge (on the right-hand column)!  Cool!  So add me if ya wanna….

But I won’t BADGEr you ’bout it 🙂

badger

Badge is an interesting word.  It’s one of the words that is not super rare but not super common either.  What does it even mean?  We all kinda know intuitively but it can be hard to pinpoint an exact definition, know what I mean?  And although Ms. Natasha Bedingfield claims we “don’t need a dictionary helping,” I actually did consult one in this case:

I read some stuff by Stephen Crane in an American Lit class at BYU.  Interesting.  Lots of violence, if I remember correctly.  Used stylistically and to serve a purpose, but still I strongly dislike the subject.  Just sayin’.

Bill Maher makes my heart sour.

Screen shot 2013-10-10 at 9.17.41 PM

Let Ms. Wilkinson give you the low-down

on what’s goin’ on with the fool pictured above:

Recap:

1)  I believe in free speech.

2)  I haven’t seen a ton of Billy’s stuff, but what I have seen is almost always disrespectful, sacrilegious, discriminatory, inappropriate, racist, unkind, profane, rude, obscene, and just overall mean.

3)  I don’t hate anyone except for Satan (although Maher makes me reconsider somewhat…).

4)  I validate people who have concerns with organized religion (or otherwise doctrinally strict life philosophies).  Read more here about this:

5)  I don’t think all atheists are bad people (read more here!).

6)  I VERY MUCH think that Bill Maher is a bad person (and I don’t make comments like that very often!).

7)  I see connections between Bill Maher and the Book of Mormon figure Korihor.

Screen shot 2013-10-10 at 9.16.06 PM

8)  There are public figures who poke fun at Mormonism (and other religious/cultural groups as well) in a way that is NOT unkind or belittling.  Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart are the ones that come to mind at the moment.

Screen shot 2013-10-11 at 9.20.51 PM

9)  If you’re dying for a television fix of a gray-haired man, may I suggest checkin’ out Anderson Cooper?  I am a fan of his stuff. And I even wrote him a lil’ poem!

Screen shot 2013-10-11 at 9.36.07 PM

10)  We may find others’ (religious) beliefs (very) odd, but still we must find the humanity and decency to show some level of respect, even if we do not (fully) agree.

Screen shot 2013-10-11 at 9.50.12 PM

CLOSING THOUGHTS

I’m not worried about (permanent) damage that Mr. Bill Maher will do to the image of the LDS Church (cuz he can’t!).  No way.  We’re here to say.  And he’ll be left to his own sad life.  (Sorry if this is a lil’ mean-spirited).

~Now Let Us Rejoice (LDS Hymn #3)

Still, Billy Boy bugs me so much so that I devoted

(a lot of) time and effort to writing this post.

Come on now, Maher. Change yo wayz a lil’ bit, huh?

BILL MAHER PUTS A SOUR taste in my mouth…

Screen shot 2013-10-11 at 9.38.55 PM

and if I’m gonna have those particular taste-buds activated,

I’d muuuuuch rather it be because of something like this:

Screen shot 2013-10-10 at 9.19.50 PM

🙂

PS.  I understand that his last name does not naturally rhyme with the word “sour;”  I twisted it for a stylistic purpose.   Lots of artists do this kind of thing (slant rhyme is the exact term).  John Mayer does it in his song “You’re No One ’til Someone Lets You Down.”  Check it stat!

proud girl!

PPS.  Not gonna lie, I’m quite proud of this post and its plethora of literary/journalistic/celebrity/religious/historical references.  Go count ’em!

2)  I have met a handful men and women who have benefited from the PEF, and it is obvious that their lives have been super blessed because of it!

Lena Dunham and her friends would do well to stop being such GIRLS (and be ladies instead!)

Screen shot 2013-10-02 at 8.21.22 AM   Screen shot 2013-10-02 at 8.20.09 AM

The HBO series “Girls” has done remarkably well in it’s short time of syndication.  Creator/producer/director/star Lena Dunham has gained critical acclaim for her series, which purports to depict a realistic look into the gritty lives of 4 young women living in a less than perfect urban New York setting.

I personally am all about the truth and very much appreciate the idea of realism.  However, this show REALLY rubs me the wrong way.  No matter what anyone tells you, the show is filthy and is all about sex.  Watch the following video for me to expound upon these ideas.  And also let me tell you some about a girl who is as real as real can be (thanks Garth Brooks!), but is still very much a lady!  As is always the case, the video is safe for all eyes and ears!

friends, I really do usually try to keep it to 2 minutes,

but I just couldn’t help it!

*I meant to say you will gain more than you miss by NOT watching that show…

Recap Schmecap:

1)  I believe in free speech.

2)  I have watched a few episodes of “Girls” (but I swear on my favorite lip gloss that I will never watch another one).

3)  Sin is Sin

4)  Wickedness NEVER was Happiness (Alma 41:10)

5)  Don’t disregard a truth/ claim I make just cuz it’s churchy and you might not be into that kind of thing…

5)  I don’t hate anyone (except for Satan)

6)  I think that show has some good thematic substance, but the junk outweighs it BIG TIME.

7) Katherine doesn’t always look show-stoppin hot, but still keeps her clothes on…

8)  Engaging in the sorts of behaviors that show portrays will NOT solve your problems.  It will multiply them!

9)  I never intend to be preachy or unkind or judgmental, but I ain’t afraid to have a strong opinion (duh!)

10)  The devil twists truth for his own purposes (William Shakespeare, “The Merchant of Venice”)

Let’s STRIP away the idea that strip-clubs are cool (because they are TERRIBLE!)

Screen shot 2013-09-23 at 9.45.42 PM

The disgusting phenomenon known as “strip clubs” is a sad and embarrassing part of our society.  As is often portrayed in pop culture, “men” will go to these kinds of clubs (why they are sometimes referred to as “Gentlemen’s Clubs” is beyond me!) soon before they get married, or even for no specific occasion at all.  For some reason which I will never fully understand, it seems fun and harmless to casually objectify women.  Sadly, sometimes women themselves  contribute to this false idea; some think they will be more appealing and sexy if they fulfill some sick fantasy.  Ew!  Totez gross!  Be a lady!  And the guys need to be real men (just like Elder Christofferson talked about in this post)!  So now howzabout you let me set the record straight on what should REALLY happen on the dance floor.

Hint: it’s classy, clean, AND still lets me bust a move.

(safe for all eyes and ears OF COURSE!)

Truths to Consider:

1)  Most girls/women who work in strip-clubs have been abused and are very unhappy (more to come on this idea in another post).

2)  Most boys/men who patronize strip-clubs are lonely, desperate, insecure, and unhappy as well.

3)  God intended for us to be sexual, but within the realm of a committed, marital relationship (read more about this here), and certainly not in some stuffy, crowded shack of sin that smells like stale armpits and halitosis.

(this sentence will be repeated in this post, FYI).

4) Miley Cyrus has sooooo very much to learn.

5)  Playboy King Hugh Hefner is a TOTAL loser!

So what is to be done?  Thankfully, all is not lost.  There are inspired leaders (ancient and modern) who have given us counsel and truth concerning these issues.  Here are just a few insights that will bring us safety and happiness if we heed them:

Screen shot 2013-09-24 at 12.02.55 AM

Dancing can be fun and can provide an opportunity to meet new people.  When dancing, avoid full body contact with your partner. Do not use positions or moves that are suggestive of sexual or violent behavior or are otherwise inappropriate….Attend only those dances where dress, grooming, lighting, lyrics, music, and entertainment contribute to a wholesome atmosphere where the Spirit may be present.

[W]atch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds,

and observe the commandments of God…

~Mosiah 4:30

Screen shot 2013-09-21 at 5.40.38 PM

And once again, lemme show you a girl who can dance

and have a good time while still keeping things clean:

dancing queen

And ya’ll, this may or may not apply to you, but just so you know,

any man who engages in any sort of these behaviors

doesn’t stand a CHANCE with me!

So keep it clean, and maybe we can get to know each other.

🙂

And now let me give you a nice, take-away quote (the one I said I’d repeat!):

Screen shot 2013-09-24 at 12.26.54 AM

“God intended for us to be sexual, but within the realm of a committed, marital relationship, and certainly not in some stuffy, crowded shack of sin that smells like stale armpits and halitosis.”

~Katie Wilk

Screen shot 2013-09-24 at 12.07.15 AM

In conclusion, let me utilize the megaphone pic of the ever lovely Ms. Bedingfield (she can move and still be a lady!) to express something that I really just wanna shout to the world:

Screen shot 2013-09-18 at 11.58.04 PM

Don’t glamorize what is ugly in reality…

 STRIP CLUBS STINK!
.

*if you wanna pass this message/post along, I wouldn’t object…

PS.  This is not a judgment on women who work in the industry, especially because so many of them are coerced or have a terrible background story.  Don’t call me judgmental, ok?  That’s not what this is about.  We’re all children of God, but sin is sin, and I’m not afraid to call it that…

“I will stand as a WITNESS of God at all times, and in all things, and in all places.”

Screen shot 2013-08-03 at 11.20.58 AMThis was a significant part of the theme I would state every Sunday in Young Women’s.  It comes from this passage in the Book of Mormon.

I am not an official spokesperson or representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  (But check out more about Michael Otterson here-he’s one of my faves)  But I still do believe it is important (AND GREATLY DESIRE!) to stand as a witness of God, even, and especially when it comes to this blog.

Now I am not perfect by any stretch.

Screen shot 2013-09-02 at 4.05.18 PMYes!  (hard to believe I know…)

Screen shot 2013-09-02 at 4.07.21 PM(“um,” I will continue, thanks John…)

And is there sometimes a bit of possible tension between my 3 fold identity of Mormon, woman, and human?

Absolutely.

But has there ever been a clash that I believe could

hurt the image of the Church or cause major confusion?

No.

And if there ever was, I don’t believe I would expose it, at least not completely.

Plus it’s not like I’m super famous anyways so even if I did I’m not sure anyone would care.  🙂

I’m only one voice in a million, but you ain’t takin’ that from me!

Lady Gaga

Imageis a very talented, innovative, and creative individual.  However, many of her outfits, songs, dance moves, and overall life choices are highly objectionable (duh!)  And that is not merely my opinion.  That is a FACT.  To borrow the words of Ms. Natasha Bedingfield, [Lady Gaga] is not the kind of girl you bring to mother.”  Still, I cannot completely overlook her artistic gifts!

So what is one to do about this paradox of trash and talent coexisting in the same woman?  I have coined a phrase that I believe perfectly captures this problem (and even offers a solution!).  Check it stat:

What did you think?

Miley Cyrus’s recent crazy antics, self-exploitation, and blatant and obscene exhibition of sexuality are not cute.  They are not funny.  They are not sexy.  They are not empowering.  They are not entertaining.  They are not artistic.  They are not healthy.

Jessica Simpson needs a grammar lesson,

Image

and Professor Wilkinson is up to the task!

Image

And Jess, notice that I took your animal prints example

so that you felt a bit more on my level.

(although it’s painfully clear who the English teacher is here…)

(1:22-1:40):

and now, smiley student, let me show you how it’s really done:

Grammar Recap:

1)  Avoid blatant self-contradictions (unless there is a highly specified purpose)

2)  Avoid using the same word twice within such a short time-span.

3)  Be ever so cautious about your level of commitment/definition when expressing surety/doubt.

4)  Wear a shirt that covers your stomach.

5)  Katherine loves aviator sunglasses…

🙂

*Oh, I would like to reiterate that surprisingly I do enjoy Ms. Simpson’s song.  Perhaps even more than this guy’s:

Telemarketers

are children of God, too!

If you don’t believe in/care about God, then telemarketers are people too.

Children of God/people can be annoying and inappropriate.

Children of God/people deserve some level of kindness, respect and decency.

JUST as much as you don’t like them calling you!

More to come on this idea.

Much more.

*Haven’t quite decided yet how I feel about portraying Renaissance artistic nudity in this blog.  Ms. Wilkinson’s thoughts are still evolving concerning this matter.

But BACK TO MY ORIGINAL TOPIC (bookending)

To choose one scripture (because there are certainly plenty!) to embody my thoughts on the subject of telemarketers, allow me to borrow from the words of the Savior:

“Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren,

you have done it unto me.”

Screen shot 2013-09-19 at 4.59.16 AM

~Matthew 25:40

Now good luck disagreeing with THAT!

🙂

PS.  I am very aware that there are telemarketers who harass, are annoying, and overstep personal/ professional boundaries.  I know that fact all too well.  Like I said: More to come.

Stay.  Tuned.

Naked

In the following video, I discuss the problematic word “naked” pertaining to a few of its common connotations (although I emphasize the idea of emotional nudity and only briefly allude to the reference of literal nudity).  I also quench my thirst for knowledge.  Literally!  As is true for pretty much everything I publish, the video is safe for all eyes and ears!

Readerz, what do YOU think of the word “naked” ?

(Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord D&C 133:55)

Imagemy naked soul exposed

Image

I’m cold and I’m ashamed lying naked on the floor

Image

I’ll soon be naked lying on the floor, lying on the floor, I’ve come undone…

Sure hope the boys of Weezer and Ms. Imbruglia are not on the same floor.

Or how about they don’tdestroy [that] sweater” and instead lend it to a freezing, distraught woman.

Sorry if this is inappropriate.

Thunderbolt of blasphemy.

(time to wrap it up, Kate…)

Concluding Thoughts:

“Naked” is a very sensitive word.  And one that I hardly use at all because I try to avoid sex appeal in my writing.  And in my living.  Don’t want it.  Don’t need it.

2) When have you needed to move to another letter in the alphabet?

I don’t love it when people watch R-rated movies, but I’ve watched a few in my life.

Back to the original topic as explicated in my title:  I have another great blog post brewin’ about the topic of Mormons /R-rated movies/ Katherine.  But for now, let me just say this:

LDS leaders have long counseled it’s members to be selective about their choice of media.  They have even specifically cautioned to avoid R-rated movies.  However, as always has been and always will be, individual agency is acknowledged and respectedJust be smart, ok?

(queue less formal voice here:)

But just so you know, I made a deal with Aphrodite.  If any of my readers watch R-rated movies, within 10 days she will strike you with a thunderbolt of blasphemy.  Plus why do you need to watch films anyways?  I know a GREAT blog you can read for entertainment, spiritual nourishment, and ugly pictures of a beautiful girl…

Oh, and one final thought.  After reviewing the video (all good writers review their work), I realized I mentioned I’m not a scientist.  Which I’m not for the most part.  But I still like the song, particularly when Natasha sings it:

Also, I was right about Potassium.

“And I’m betting you like girls that stroke your little ego…”

I got a way with words, people.  And when necessary, I’m not afraid to turn up the charm, bat my pretty (fake) lashes, and use those words TO GET WHAT I WANT.  But sometimes, people see what I’m doing and call me out on it.  “Now you’re just stroking my ego,” they’ve said before.  Well, just one question:

Image

IS IT WORKING?

P.S.  I do use words to get my way, but I’m smart and careful about it too.  And even though words can be a tool, Katherine is NOT.  My words can convince and persuade, but that doesn’t mean they are phony or fake.  These words are my own; they’re from my heart.

and I wouldn’t be the person I am without her. Image

But MOST importantly, I wouldn’t have watched the movie without her.

🙂

PS.  I have thought a lot about this idea of  hobbies/interests (ie Natasha Bedingfield) getting in the way of REAL life.  Check it stat:

PPS.  In the end, Jimmy Fallon’s character gets his act together, gets the girl, gets to the game, AND the Sox win the 2004 World Series.  Every once in a while, EVERYONE WINS!  Take that, Curse of Bambino!

PPPS.  If my guy ever wanted to read about sports while I blogged on my Mac computer, that wouldn’t be the end of the world…

so we’re here to audition!

What would you prefer us to sing/play first?  Have you heard of a British woman named Natasha Bedingfield (TOTAL anachronism, I know.  Just go with it, please!)

PS.  That “food poisoning” may or may not have been accidental.  If you find any mysterious substance in my car, I must have been framed!  But rest assured, it’s only temporary.  Greta and Rigita will be fine come a few weeks.  I may fight my way to the top, but I don’t believe in murder.  And my PS is getting longer than the rest of the post, so better say adios.  Actually, come to think of it, let the family serenade you:

The linguistic genius of Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin

In October 2008, Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin (an apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) gave an address entitled “Come What May and Love it” in Mormon General Conference.  It caught on like wild-fire.  The address has to do with not only accepting unforeseen circumstances, but also finding JOY in them.  Best part is when he mentions how his daughter’s blind-date went awry.  The address itself is fantastic to say the least, but I think the REAL genius is in the title/catch-phrase.  You see, Elder Wirthlin took a familiar phrase:

AND MADE IT HIS OWN!

(Read the talk here)

And thus he single-handedly spawned many a kitchen plaque and Pinterest Meme…

So that’s the key to making something do so well!  Do a phrase twist!  Take an idiom/cliche that everyone knows well, and add your own unique spin to it!  That way, “that original feeling [will] never [go] away“!

I’ve tried this tactic before; on this blog even!  Here are a few of my examples.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness, but it’s NOT Godliness.

Twitter/Jitter-Bug.

Blog is made for Katherine, and NOT Katherine for Blog.

One is sexy dark chocolate, and the other flaxen gold.

Lessons Plans are made for teachers, and NOT teachers for lesson plans.

(oh yah, and the Biebz has been known to do it, too.  Here’s one example:  The grass ain’t always greener on the other side, it’s green where you water it.)

Of course, I’ll never be able to do it as well as Elder Wirthlin.  Come to think of it, his wife was an English major if I remember correctly.  He probz got it all from her.  And so I guess it looks like my future husband will be an apostle then…TBOB! (thunderbolt of blasphemy)…

PS.  In case you are wondering, this post alone contains ideas inspired by the following:  Elder Wirthlin, Natasha Bedingfield, BYU, Moulin Rouge, Twitter, The Book of Luke in the New Testament, Justin Bieber, Pinterest, and blasphemy/sacrilege.  Well done, Katherine.  Well.  Done.  🙂

Hide yo kids, hide yo wife!

Screen shot 2013-08-14 at 9.29.57 AMThe video from which this still comes is meant to be funny (though personally I find it offensive), but it brings up a lot of serious issues.  Our world is fallen, and although there are so many beautiful reasons i have to be happy, no one can deny that there is A LOT of evil out there, particularly when it comes to how people treat children.  Penn State Scandal, Casey Anthony case, etc, it seems to be everywhere we look.  It can be almost enough to make us want to stay indoors forever and never want to interact with anyone again (let alone have our own children), but I believe there are resources available to help us cope with this problem.  The following LDS General Conference address is a landmark talk on some ways to not only help us prevent (child) abuse, but also heal from it.

Read here.

Parents, in sensitive, appropriate ways,

teach your children some of the warning signs of abuse.

I also like this resource because it helps us identify the location of predators so that we can better keep our children safe.

Do you have any other practical ideas to help us (from a grassroots perspective) combat this problem?  Lemme know:  katherineannewilkinson@gmail.com

When children have to play inside so they don’t disappear…
