Let’s STRIP away the idea that strip-clubs are cool (because they are TERRIBLE!)

Screen shot 2013-09-23 at 9.45.42 PM

The disgusting phenomenon known as “strip clubs” is a sad and embarrassing part of our society.  As is often portrayed in pop culture, “men” will go to these kinds of clubs (why they are sometimes referred to as “Gentlemen’s Clubs” is beyond me!) soon before they get married, or even for no specific occasion at all.  For some reason which I will never fully understand, it seems fun and harmless to casually objectify women.  Sadly, sometimes women themselves  contribute to this false idea; some think they will be more appealing and sexy if they fulfill some sick fantasy.  Ew!  Totez gross!  Be a lady!  And the guys need to be real men (just like Elder Christofferson talked about in this post)!  So now howzabout you let me set the record straight on what should REALLY happen on the dance floor.

Hint: it’s classy, clean, AND still lets me bust a move.

(safe for all eyes and ears OF COURSE!)

Truths to Consider:

1)  Most girls/women who work in strip-clubs have been abused and are very unhappy (more to come on this idea in another post).

2)  Most boys/men who patronize strip-clubs are lonely, desperate, insecure, and unhappy as well.

3)  God intended for us to be sexual, but within the realm of a committed, marital relationship (read more about this here), and certainly not in some stuffy, crowded shack of sin that smells like stale armpits and halitosis.

(this sentence will be repeated in this post, FYI).

4) Miley Cyrus has sooooo very much to learn.

5)  Playboy King Hugh Hefner is a TOTAL loser!

So what is to be done?  Thankfully, all is not lost.  There are inspired leaders (ancient and modern) who have given us counsel and truth concerning these issues.  Here are just a few insights that will bring us safety and happiness if we heed them:

Dancing can be fun and can provide an opportunity to meet new people.  When dancing, avoid full body contact with your partner. Do not use positions or moves that are suggestive of sexual or violent behavior or are otherwise inappropriate….Attend only those dances where dress, grooming, lighting, lyrics, music, and entertainment contribute to a wholesome atmosphere where the Spirit may be present.

[W]atch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds,

and observe the commandments of God…

And once again, lemme show you a girl who can dance

and have a good time while still keeping things clean:

dancing queen

And ya’ll, this may or may not apply to you, but just so you know,

any man who engages in any sort of these behaviors

doesn’t stand a CHANCE with me!

So keep it clean, and maybe we can get to know each other.

🙂

And now let me give you a nice, take-away quote (the one I said I’d repeat!):

In conclusion, let me utilize the megaphone pic of the ever lovely Ms. Bedingfield (she can move and still be a lady!) to express something that I really just wanna shout to the world:

Don’t glamorize what is ugly in reality…

 STRIP CLUBS STINK!
.

*if you wanna pass this message/post along, I wouldn’t object…

PS.  This is not a judgment on women who work in the industry, especially because so many of them are coerced or have a terrible background story.  Don’t call me judgmental, ok?  That’s not what this is about.  We’re all children of God, but sin is sin, and I’m not afraid to call it that…

We at war with terrorism,

We at war with racism,

but most of all, we at war with ourselves.

STOP BEATING YOURSELF UP!

“Do as the heavens have done,

forget your evil; With them forgive yourself.”

    ~William Shakespeare (A Winter’s Tale)

“…and though your sins

[or insecurities/baggage/ idiosyncracies/lips/WHATEVER!]
be as scarletthey shall be as white as snow.”

Oh, except that when it comes to lips, I prefer red

over white (LITERALLY) 8 days a week.

🙂

PS.  I am VERY careful about how I portray violence (if at all) in this blog.  So I understand if that first picture is a bit offensive, but I just love how it captures what so many of us do to ourselves.  Britney ain’t perfect, but that’s pretty genius I think.

A guest poet!

Image

The following poem is written by my friend Mackenzie.  She is a good friend who likes to write poetry (obviously!), prepare for  her upcoming LDS mission, and rock out in the car with me to Kelly Clarkson.  This poem is a beautiful expression of her trials, but also her faith.  I publish this with her permission.

Much Longer

I can’t do it any other way unless the Lord is on my side

In this small peep-hole my life seems like a long ride

I need to trust my faith when all else is failing me

Trying to envision just who God wants me to be

If in failing I lose all sense of self, I know God will be my spiritual wealth

I’m so many broken pieces learning to find my way

But with the Lord on my side, I can never go astray

I need to get my license, that broken piece chips my eye

So many unneedful crystal clear tears that I cry

I want to serve the Lord, that broken piece chips my aching heart

With my faith in all sorts of parts

How much longer will my confidence sink?

This life goes by in such a blink

I need to build up a light around me so that darkness cannot succeed

Christ’s light is what I thirst, it’s what I need

Wow!  Nothing I could say would do this poem justice, so I’ll just let it speak for itself.  Love you, Kenz!

Starting to rethink this whole tanning thing…

Remember when I told you I had learned to be confident having less melanin in my skin that others (IE I was happy being a whitie)?

Well, after reviewing some of the following pictures,

I’m beginning to have second thoughts…

PS.  Readers PLEASE KNOW that skin color/tanning is NOT the only thing I think about when I see these pictures.  Sure I appreciate beauty/fashion/makeup/color, etc. but even I’m not that shallow as to forget the wonderful faith, spirit, friendship and love of the people I met in Fiji.

To address some concerns…

I’ve had a few people respond to some of my posts in ways that make me think that THEY think I hate myself.  Posts about bad makeup or being single or whatever.  I appreciate your concern, and also know that even with such a flavorful writer’s voice as mine, it can be hard to read emotion via technology.  But please know that I am happy!  This is not me fishing for compliments.  This is not me rejecting compliments either 🙂

If I didn’t have the confidence to poke fun at my insecurities, I wouldn’t do it.  And here’s the thing.  The sweet spot that I’ve gotten to has made it so that my insecurities lessen (and even sometimes disappear!) when I find the humor in them.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it!

“You don’t have to be tan to be beautiful…”

Image

Thank you Miss Melissa for explicating this simple yet life-changing truth to me when we were freshman at BYU.  This revelation helped me shed years of insecurity and also save a little money since I no longer was buying tan-in-a-can every other week.  Sure I like to have a summer glow now and then, but I no longer feel ugly because my skin doesn’t look like leather.
