Let’s STRIP away the idea that strip-clubs are cool (because they are TERRIBLE!)

Screen shot 2013-09-23 at 9.45.42 PM

The disgusting phenomenon known as “strip clubs” is a sad and embarrassing part of our society.  As is often portrayed in pop culture, “men” will go to these kinds of clubs (why they are sometimes referred to as “Gentlemen’s Clubs” is beyond me!) soon before they get married, or even for no specific occasion at all.  For some reason which I will never fully understand, it seems fun and harmless to casually objectify women.  Sadly, sometimes women themselves  contribute to this false idea; some think they will be more appealing and sexy if they fulfill some sick fantasy.  Ew!  Totez gross!  Be a lady!  And the guys need to be real men (just like Elder Christofferson talked about in this post)!  So now howzabout you let me set the record straight on what should REALLY happen on the dance floor.

Hint: it’s classy, clean, AND still lets me bust a move.

(safe for all eyes and ears OF COURSE!)

Truths to Consider:

1)  Most girls/women who work in strip-clubs have been abused and are very unhappy (more to come on this idea in another post).

2)  Most boys/men who patronize strip-clubs are lonely, desperate, insecure, and unhappy as well.

3)  God intended for us to be sexual, but within the realm of a committed, marital relationship (read more about this here), and certainly not in some stuffy, crowded shack of sin that smells like stale armpits and halitosis.

(this sentence will be repeated in this post, FYI).

4) Miley Cyrus has sooooo very much to learn.

5)  Playboy King Hugh Hefner is a TOTAL loser!

So what is to be done?  Thankfully, all is not lost.  There are inspired leaders (ancient and modern) who have given us counsel and truth concerning these issues.  Here are just a few insights that will bring us safety and happiness if we heed them:

Dancing can be fun and can provide an opportunity to meet new people.  When dancing, avoid full body contact with your partner. Do not use positions or moves that are suggestive of sexual or violent behavior or are otherwise inappropriate….Attend only those dances where dress, grooming, lighting, lyrics, music, and entertainment contribute to a wholesome atmosphere where the Spirit may be present.

and observe the commandments of God…

And once again, lemme show you a girl who can dance

and have a good time while still keeping things clean:

dancing queen

And ya’ll, this may or may not apply to you, but just so you know,

any man who engages in any sort of these behaviors

doesn’t stand a CHANCE with me!

So keep it clean, and maybe we can get to know each other.

🙂

And now let me give you a nice, take-away quote (the one I said I’d repeat!):

In conclusion, let me utilize the megaphone pic of the ever lovely Ms. Bedingfield (she can move and still be a lady!) to express something that I really just wanna shout to the world:

Don’t glamorize what is ugly in reality…

 STRIP CLUBS STINK!
.

*if you wanna pass this message/post along, I wouldn’t object…

PS.  This is not a judgment on women who work in the industry, especially because so many of them are coerced or have a terrible background story.  Don’t call me judgmental, ok?  That’s not what this is about.  We’re all children of God, but sin is sin, and I’m not afraid to call it that…

Telemarketers

are children of God, too!

If you don’t believe in/care about God, then telemarketers are people too.

Children of God/people can be annoying and inappropriate.

Children of God/people deserve some level of kindness, respect and decency.

Screen shot 2013-09-18 at 6.01.55 PM

It’s likely that they don’t like their job

JUST as much as you don’t like them calling you!

Just sayin.

More to come on this idea.

Much more.

*Haven’t quite decided yet how I feel about portraying Renaissance artistic nudity in this blog.  Ms. Wilkinson’s thoughts are still evolving concerning this matter.

But BACK TO MY ORIGINAL TOPIC (bookending)

To choose one scripture (because there are certainly plenty!) to embody my thoughts on the subject of telemarketers, allow me to borrow from the words of the Savior:

“Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren,

Screen shot 2013-09-19 at 5.00.36 AM

you have done it unto me.”

Screen shot 2013-09-19 at 4.59.16 AM

~Matthew 25:40

Now good luck disagreeing with THAT!

🙂

PS.  I am very aware that there are telemarketers who harass, are annoying, and overstep personal/ professional boundaries.  I know that fact all too well.  Like I said: More to come.

Stay.  Tuned.

Divine Organism

A few years back, a stupid 90s pop song suggested that the human race was merely mating mammals likened unto primates on a popular scientific television program.  Um, that’s pretty ridiculous, if you ask Kath.  Check it out:

Plus there are WAAAAAY better episodes to discover by clicking our channel changer to something else…

And now I would like to share a poem from a few years ago (I wrote it for extra credit for Biology 100 at BYU).  It is not exactly related, but it still speaks of these ideas of science/God/creation, et cetera.  Again, I’m no scientist (and don’t pretend to be!).  But I like to try to explore the ideas of reconciliation of seemingly opposing truths (over which theologians, experts, and philosophers have fought for centuries!).  HERE IT IS!

Creation or evolution?

What’s the solution?

Did God make man?

Or is it from apes we began?

Some thump their Bibles, saying evolution is libel

Some their microscopes claiming God is a hoax…

Creation or Evolution?

What’s the solution?

In this time of scientific and religious growth,

maybe the answer is BOTH!

What didjaylthink?  Again, I don’t pretend to be an expert (but check out more about Mormon scientist Henry Eyring here!) and I CERTAINLY don’t pretend to be the only person who thinks creation and evolution do not need to be mutually exclusive (line of propriety YET AGAIN!).

But seriously that poem is pretty awesome 🙂

(read it again and ponder every. single. word.)

And now a beautiful song from a band that has had on an indelible influence on not only music, not only the world, but also on Katherine!

Lyrics here

(the title is phrase-twisting Mr. Chuck 🙂 Darwin’s famous piece…)

charles-darwin-320x240

There is obviously a lot more to say about these ideas (and you better believe I have more to write!), but this much will suffice for today.

This is a picture from an LDS temple, where we learn more about how divine (of organisms) we really are.

(and I’m allowed to show this pic in case you are wondering!)

It. Gets. Better.

Just watch it, okay? 🙂

(and don’t say you don’t have 10 minutes; You ARE reading this blog, after all!)

In April 2012 I attended a seminar put on by the Sociology department at BYU concerning these same issues.  It wasn’t about marriage/ legal stuff at all.  It was just about what it is like to be gay/ lesbian/ bisexual, but still abide by the laws of God and the precepts of the Honor Code.

There is LOTS to say about the seminar, and I hate to try to “sum up” an event that was very complex, very classy, and very important.  But for now I’ll simply express that I was incredibly inspired by the bravery of not only the 4 panel members (who each told his/her individual story with honesty, tact, and vulnerability), but also by everyone who in any way experiences same-gender attraction, particularly if they choose to abide by the standards of the LDS Church.

Thank you.

God loves you.

I do too.

A guest poet!

Image

The following poem is written by my friend Mackenzie.  She is a good friend who likes to write poetry (obviously!), prepare for  her upcoming LDS mission, and rock out in the car with me to Kelly Clarkson.  This poem is a beautiful expression of her trials, but also her faith.  I publish this with her permission.

Much Longer

I can’t do it any other way unless the Lord is on my side

In this small peep-hole my life seems like a long ride

I need to trust my faith when all else is failing me

Trying to envision just who God wants me to be

If in failing I lose all sense of self, I know God will be my spiritual wealth

I’m so many broken pieces learning to find my way

But with the Lord on my side, I can never go astray

I need to get my license, that broken piece chips my eye

So many unneedful crystal clear tears that I cry

I want to serve the Lord, that broken piece chips my aching heart

With my faith in all sorts of parts

How much longer will my confidence sink?

This life goes by in such a blink

I need to build up a light around me so that darkness cannot succeed

Christ’s light is what I thirst, it’s what I need

Wow!  Nothing I could say would do this poem justice, so I’ll just let it speak for itself.  Love you, Kenz!

SOME MONEY SO FAR…but not a ton 🙂

Don’t want to get into that whole pride cycle thing described in the Book of Mormon.  Although I AM already a Lamanite, right?

I WANT YOU TO BE PART OF MY BLOG!  I am all about collaboration: musical, writing, business, product review, food, sharing of religious beliefs, etc.  No promises, but as long as I feel like it represents myself, my family, my friends, and the Lord well, I’m up to discuss it.  Dead serious.  katherineannewilkinson@gmail.com

Lawyer Stereotypes….

Lawyers get a bad name.  Sleezy lawyer jokes; we’ve all heard them!  Anyways, my father defies all of those.  He was a lawyer, but is also a scriptural/doctrine heavyweight.  And he’s stayed true to God all these years.

Think Atticus Finch, ya’ll.  Love ya Dad!

PS.  A few years ago, there was an article written in the BYU Alumni magazine about this kind of idea of lawyers not being sleeze-bags.  It was called “In Search of Atticus Finch” based on an idea by Mike Papantonio.  I can download it as a PDF, but don’t know how to attach it to this blog.  If you are interested, google it!

When it comes to God and my religious beliefs, I’m not gonna shove it down your throat, but I’m not gonna walk on eggshells, either.

Screen shot 2013-09-03 at 10.29.53 AM

Figuratively OR literally.  A comfortable middle-ground (remember that phrase, it’s a good one).

I’m not gonna walk on eggshells,

but I’m not gonna shove it down your throat.

       OR

I’m not gonna shove it down your throat,

but I’m not gonna walk on eggshells

syntax matters…

And I know that Kanye West is not the best person on the planet, but don’t overlook his stellar talent with words and what he has to say on this subject:

“I ain’t here to convert atheists to believers, I’m just trying to say the way school need teachers, the way that Kathy Lee needs Regis, that’s the way I need Jesus.”

Yes, I, a total and complete WASP, just quoted some Kanye.  What can I say?

Oh, plus he and I have the same initials.  🙂

And to bookend with a key phrase in my title, allow me to borrow a phrase from Natasha Bedingfield (who else?):

Won’t walk on eggshells so you don’t hear the “crazy(?) things I’m saying…

We know that the story had a happy ending, but at the time the pioneers didn’t necessarily know the outcome.  They were just people of unbelievable faith who were along for the ride and hoping their car wouldn’t crash.  Good thing I wasn’t driving…

10 fingers and 5 toes

I have a certain friend.  He has 10 fingers and 5 toes.  He had a freak-accident (I’m no stranger to those) a few years ago where he had to have them amputated.  Cray-cray, right?  Anyways, this guy is a good guy.  He is really funny and close to the Lord and works hard.  Even though he doesn’t live in Provo anymore, I am so grateful for our friendship and just know we will keep in touch for years to come 🙂  I will show you a picture of his foot (but not of his face!)

Image

And guess what?  His foot ain’t the most interesting thing about him…not in the least 🙂

Not a Black (name) Tag, but a Blog Tag

Screen shot 2013-08-21 at 3.20.54 AM

I did not serve a full-time mission for my church.  At one point I was planning on it and even bought a bunch of cute clothes, and we all know that’s the most important part about being a missionary right? 🙂  Some days I so badly wish I had, while other days I feel more confident about my decision not to.  But it’s all good, cuz guess what?  I can use this blog to share what I believe!  It is not my primary purpose in writing and not every post deals with it, but it is a part of who I am, and I wish to share it with others who may be interested in learning ways that they can be happy and have a relationship with God.

Our church leaders recently announced a major change in some of the policies concerning how missionary work would go about.  The LDS Church always has the same purpose of bringing people to Christ, but now there is huge push to utilize technology and social media to be more efficient and user-friendly.  You no longer have to have 2 missionaries come into your home (although you can if you want to) to ask questions.  You can do it online here.  It doesn’t matter if your room is a mess.  You can even do it in your underwear!  Haha.  So maybe I didn’t have a black tag, but I have a “missionary work” blog tag.  Click on it if you want to learn more.  Don’t worry, we won’t dunk you (baptism!) right away 🙂

Oh, and as always you can shoot me an email at anytime if you have any questions:
