We simply can’t (any longer) ignore, the havoc caused by the Common Core!

ImageI believe in having high academic expectations, but the Common Core (one of the newest controversies concerning standardized testing) is taking that waaaaay too far, and is completely alienating students from actual learning. This blog post (I didn’t write it!) does an excellent job of explaining and illustrating why it is so very destructive:

We’re talking (good) kids contemplating suicide over the stress and anxiety they feel because of a test. That’s wrong.

We simply can’t (any longer) ignore

the havoc caused by the Common Core!

Perpetual Education Fund

1)  Learn more here about the amazingness known as the “Perpetual Education Fund.”

2)  I have met a handful men and women who have benefited from the PEF, and it is obvious that their lives have been super blessed because of it!

3)  I like the band “Fun” a lot.  Here’s one of my favorite songs by them:

When you’re lost and alone, and you’re sinking like a stone….

CARRY ON!

ImageClosing Thoughts:

The Latter-day Saint Perpetual Education Fund has done (and continues to do!) amazing things for men and women around the world who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to receive an education and better their economic opportunities.  It is truly a philanthropic flagship, and I am grateful to pay a portion of my offerings to it every now and then.

Embellishing and exaggerating one’s humanitarian, educational, philanthropic achievements…

Image

is NOT my cup of tea.

Figuratively or literally.

Let it be known that I DO think that Mr. Mortenson has done some excellent things.

ImageAbsolutely.

ImageCONTROVERSY.  OVERSHADOWS.  TALENT.

(click here for an explanation of this ubiquitous

[and sad!] sociological phenomenon)

Sigh.

If you fabricate your facts,

Oh, and this is tangential, but “Runaway Bride” is one of my favorite films EVER.  If you think it is a mindless chick flick, you are dead wrong!  There is so much thematic substance in it that can relate to everyone.  And I do mean everyone.  Plus it’s funny, clean, short, and has the cute and talented Ms. Julia Roberts!

But BACK TO YOU (Mr. Greg Mortenson)

(and this applies to everyone else too!)

ImageO be wise, what can I say more?

Honest is whatcha gotta be

next time you write a book like “Three Cups of Tea”!

More to come on these issues (all of them!).

Much more.

I have responsibilities…

Image   Screen shot 2013-09-10 at 5.20.47 PM Screen shot 2013-09-10 at 5.22.13 PM

but only because I choose to have responsibilities.

I believe in accepting legitimate criticism and also in getting out of my comfort zone, but if anyone ever tries to force or pressure me into anything in a manner or form with which I am not comfortable in any way at all…

I’M GONE!

Image

figuratively AND literally…

But as is always the case, I am kind and civil about this.  Ain’t no James Dean, “rebel without a cause” thing going on here.  This is NOT me being selfish or evading (legitimate) responsibility in any way at all.

I desire to work hard and stretch myself to serve others.

Still though.  The number 1 person on my list is ME!

and for that I will NEVER apologize…

🙂

READERS!

1) What responsibilities do you choose to have?

2) What is your LINE OF PROPRIETY when it comes to responsibility?

A phrase I do NOT like:

“My body is a temple, and YOU don’t have a recommend.”

Screen shot 2013-08-17 at 11.54.48 AM

Another phrase twist with a specific Mormon flare.  But I ain’t diggin’ this one.  It seems too sexual, too arrogant, too exclusionary (particularly in relation to LDS temples) and too literal.  I believe in chastity, but don’t think we need to talk about it in a suggestive way, know what I’m sayin’?  There’s gotta be a way to express our views on modesty/virtue WITHOUT doing that kind of thing.

The English teacher in me has to ask, “Do you agree.  Why or why not?”

PS.  I suppose this post is a bit hypocritical since I DID write one comparing Mormon temples to sex/chastity.  But it’s more classy, I think 🙂
