Never Been More Grateful…

It’s Thanksgiving, right?  So lemme express and explain to ya one specific thing that I am SUPER grateful for:

Image

Today, when (I feel) our government is wildly reckless with our hard-earned money, I have never been more grateful that I can unreservedly trust giving 10% of my income to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the form of tithing.

I am completely confident that our funds are being wisely allocated.

What have YOU never been more grateful for?

I very much trust Dave Ramsey when he says that the so-called “Affordable” Care Act STINKS!

Screen shot 2013-10-15 at 3.44.04 PM Screen shot 2013-10-15 at 3.42.38 PM

Seriously, this guy (Dave, NOT our president!) has got the ethos to back up his claims:  He was formerly bankrupt (several times, if I recall correctly) and went through financial hell before he learned how to turn things around.  Today, he is a self-made millionaire and money guru who uses his past experiences to help others avoid (and recover from!) the kind of mistakes he once made.

DAVE RAMSEY KNOWS HIS MONEY SHIZZLE!

Check out his awesome website here.

Read/watch Dave’s entire message here.

PS.  Just a bit more about Dave Ramsey (more to come in another post!).

(some) Reasons He’s Awesome!

1)  He is Christian, but knows how to appeal to all audiences (just like me!)

2)  He is a teacher (just like me!)

3)  He is funny (just like me!)

4)  He is passionate AND logical (just like me!)

5)  He prefers not to trash-talk, but he’s not afraid to tell it like it is (just like me!)

6)  He has had major trials in his life.  (just like me!)

7)  He is an accidental entrepreneur.  (just like me!)

8)  He is intelligent.  (just like me!)

9)  He’s got sass and spunk.  (just like me!)

10)  He cares about other people and their problems.  (just like me!)

Overall, Dave Ramsey is AWESOME!

Perpetual Education Fund

1)  Learn more here about the amazingness known as the “Perpetual Education Fund.”

2)  I have met a handful men and women who have benefited from the PEF, and it is obvious that their lives have been super blessed because of it!

3)  I like the band “Fun” a lot.  Here’s one of my favorite songs by them:

When you’re lost and alone, and you’re sinking like a stone….

CARRY ON!

ImageClosing Thoughts:

The Latter-day Saint Perpetual Education Fund has done (and continues to do!) amazing things for men and women around the world who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to receive an education and better their economic opportunities.  It is truly a philanthropic flagship, and I am grateful to pay a portion of my offerings to it every now and then.

Telemarketers

ImageImage  Image

ImageScreen shot 2013-09-18 at 5.56.44 PM

are children of God, too!

If you don’t believe in/care about God, then telemarketers are people too.

Children of God/people can be annoying and inappropriate.

Children of God/people deserve some level of kindness, respect and decency.

Screen shot 2013-09-18 at 6.01.55 PM

It’s likely that they don’t like their job

JUST as much as you don’t like them calling you!

Just sayin.

More to come on this idea.

Much more.

*Haven’t quite decided yet how I feel about portraying Renaissance artistic nudity in this blog.  Ms. Wilkinson’s thoughts are still evolving concerning this matter.

But BACK TO MY ORIGINAL TOPIC (bookending)

To choose one scripture (because there are certainly plenty!) to embody my thoughts on the subject of telemarketers, allow me to borrow from the words of the Savior:

“Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren,

Screen shot 2013-09-19 at 5.00.36 AM

you have done it unto me.”

Screen shot 2013-09-19 at 4.59.16 AM

~Matthew 25:40

Now good luck disagreeing with THAT!

🙂

PS.  I am very aware that there are telemarketers who harass, are annoying, and overstep personal/ professional boundaries.  I know that fact all too well.  Like I said: More to come.

Stay.  Tuned.

“No Promises”

Image  Image  Image

is a phrase that I have found to be quite useful as I navigate this journey of life.  I am certainly not suggesting that we avoid making any promises, but only that we make sure we don’t get people’s hopes up when we cannot back up our commitments with 100% surety (myth vs. experience).  Additionally, we needn’t “run faster than [we] have strength” (Mosiah 4:27) in trying to keep promises we perhaps should not have made in the first place.  Now, don’t be calling me lazy!  As I have said before, I desire to serve others, get out of my comfort zone, and work hard.  Still though, I cannot do it all.  Neither can you. Neither can any one person (and that’s okay, ya’ll!)  So we must decide what kinds of things are worth the word “promise” (or at least the level of commitment that it implies).  But when we do make those promises, let’s make them count!

line of propriety, line of propriety, line of propriety, line of propriety,

“I never make a promise I don’t intend to keep.”

John-Michael-Montgomery-270x300

~John Michael Montgomery

READERS:

1)  What promises have you made (or will make) that are important to keep (family, covenants, relationships, employment, etc.)?

2)  What are some aspects of your life about which you should probably not make promises?

Image

And now, one final question:

Is this blog the best thing in the world?

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem”

~Luke 13:34

As you can probably guess, I had an internal struggle of whether or not I wanted to include a picture of this “book.”  But the juxtaposition is powerful enough that I feel it is justified.

Men, women, and children all over the world experience sexual/ emotional/ physical abuse.  And now one of the best selling books in America (and soon to be film) tries to make this stuff look hot?!  I think I just threw up a little bit…

Read more here about my VERY strong feelings concerning “50 shades of disgusting/filth/trash.”

And as is always the case, if you believe what I’m saying, don’t be afraid to PASS THIS ALONG!

Really Awesome Readers!

What does the stuff you read say about you?

For good and for bad?

and since you are what you read,

KathBath knows that you are at least somewhat awesome!

(since you’re reading my blog!)

Pay Day!

Explore More Issues Here:

1)  Line of Propriety

2)  Sunburn stuff

3)  Bad hair day means good writing day!

4)  Bragging?  Guilty.  YOU WOULD TOO!

Oh, and by the way, I was singing a version of a John Mayer song (SHOCKING, right?)….

Lyrics here.

The song is VERY interesting.  The melody/guitar itself is hauntingly beautiful, but the words are contradicting the story-teller’s true convictions (unreliable narrators are FASCINATING).  You see, Johnny is lonely and trying to convince himself that he can engage in self-destructive behaviors (drugs, women, etc.) and it won’t effect him.  Sad.

Have done my own version of “Who Says.”  And I will DEFINITELY include it soon…

But Back to the Benjamins:

Laughing all the way to the bank…

PS.  The check wasn’t for a ton.  And also it will not even begin to cover the costs of medical expenses I will incur from the pending thunderbolt of blasphemy I will shortly receive due to my comparing myself to Brad Paisley.

“Blagging”

Image

Is bragging about your blog.

I try hard not to do that, but no promises.  I am only human after all:

Oh and speaking of, Brandon Flowers IS Mormon.  Check it out!

And just back to blagging for one second, yes I have earned money, yes, I do have readers in 34 countries, yes I have made friends and helped others’ network as well, yes I have been able to email people in Alaska about the Book of Mormon, yes I have people contacting me about product reviews, and yes I am happy.  But I digress…

Lil Wayne’s Got Nothin’ on Me!

Lil Wayne wanted to know if this girl was down for a sing-off.

Know what she said?

Image      vs.  Image

“Honestly, I’m down like the economy!”

Compare this (start at 2:24-3:00):

Lyrics here:

To this (start at 1:02-1:43):

(I changed the gender pronouns.  I do that kind of thing a lot.)

Readers, what do you think?

PS.  Wayne, I love and respect you no matter what (not really, but just didn’t want to come off as judgmental and also wanted to soften this next part), BUT your body is a temple…why would you want to put graffiti on it?  Join the LDS Church and I’ll help you pay to get rid of those tats (but readers FYI you don’t have to do that if you want to become a Mormon-just thought I’d clear that up)…

My (near perfect) approach to satire…

Screen shot 2014-06-03 at 11.17.26 PMscreen-shot-2013-09-18-at-11-58-04-pm

When it comes to our world and its issues, there is a lot to say!

… And a lot to criticize

There are absolutely times when it’s important to speak plainly and even harshly.  To reprove with sharpness (Doctrine and Covenants 121:43) , and to not beat around the bush (From what I understand, my grandfather Ernest Wilkinson often preferred this approach.).

So I occasionally will speak harshly (but still intelligently!) about subjects, but my passion does not overrule my logic (and vice versa).

Here are 2 of my strongest examples yet:

1)  Some Mansions

2)  Halloween Costume from Hell

And there are certain topics that Katherine simply will not explore in a comedic way (humor is great, but out of bounds can be dangerous, obscene, and grossly offensive).

You will never see any joke on my blog about racism, abuse, pornography, or violence.

And it is NOT that I am afraid of alienating readers (although I do seek to maintain them!).  It is that those jokes are not a part of my life AT ALL, and therefore most certainly will not be part of my blog.

Screen shot 2014-06-03 at 11.23.45 PMScreen shot 2014-06-03 at 11.29.20 PM

However, when it comes to less serious (but still important!) issues like modesty, time spent on Facebook, and dating, things that are relevant to many people but are especially present in my psyche as a Mormon living in Provo, I like to (try to) be  funny!  I often think deeply about the issue (let it cook in the crock-pot of my mind for a while), but usually say very little.  It’s that whole “economy of words” things again.

Sure I know how to write 15 page papers, but in this case, I think that often the less said, the better.  Brevity IS the soul of wit, ya’ll! As long as what you are saying is funny, uplifting, entertaining, honest, but still speaks an important truth and sparks discussion and thought, I believe that often the point gets across most clearly and perfectly.  The idea of “truth in jest” shows up in almost all of my posts, and it is the core of my approach to satire.

(2 Shakespeare references in 1 paragraph-not bad!)

Two of my greatest influences in this respect are Ellen DeGeneres and Brad Paisley.  Both are brilliant comedians and satirists (Brad is also extremely good looking and could shred a guitar to pieces), but are NOT preachy or unkind.  They respect the intelligence of their audience.  And I believe this is what makes them so good.  Check out these two examples:

Well done, you two.  Well done.  Thanks so much for your inspiration.

And now back to the woman of the hour…

Screen shot 2013-09-01 at 9.30.44 AM

My satire may not be perfect, but it is funny, witty, occasionally sexy, intelligent, clean, refreshing, and overall pretty darn awesome, if I do say so myself.

🙂

“You’re always quoting songs!”

Screen shot 2013-08-16 at 5.27.13 PM

If I had a nickel for every time I heard this phrase (or something along those lines), I wouldn’t even care about the fortune I plan on making from this blog 🙂  No but seriously, I’ve given this idea some real thought.  And here’s what I’ve come up with:  I do not mean to be a walking song.  I can see how my near constant lyrical references could come off as being trite or cliche, not to mention potentially annoying.  It’s just that if someone has already found the words that perfectly express what you are feeling, why would you try to find new ones?  Economy of thought, people!  Plus you can still be creative and original by borrowing art.  Moulin Rouge, anyone?
