Is [Wo]Man Good or Bad? (this is one of my favorite things I’ve written!)

Screen shot 2014-09-26 at 4.08.19 PM

Let’s get into some philosophy, yah? I kinda feel like tackling arguably THE ultimate question of human existence. Here it is:

Is man good or bad?

This topic has been the subject of intense debate throughout the centuries (2 of the most notable dissenters beings Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau) and has been a driving question in how we form governments, make laws, motivate individuals, punish criminals, etc.

It may be tempting to paint humanity as a loving bunch, and it’s true that there have been some incredible individuals throughout history who have treated others with kindness and compassion. But it would be utterly naive to deny the wickedness that man is capable of as well. Mass murders and perpetrators of violence and gross injustice demonstrate “the evil that men do” (to quote Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”).

Maroon 5’s “Animals” Dangerously Objectifies Women…

Maroon 5 Animals Sexist Misogynistic

Maroon 5 have always been a bunch of dirtbags, but their newest song “Animals” hits a new low with its strong implications of sexual violence. A lot of the same stuff as “Blurred Lines” going on.

“Baby, I’m preying on you tonight
Hunt you down, eat you alive…
I cut you out entirely
We’re just like animals.”
(and some other obscene lyrics)

THIS is the war on women.
A bunch of libertine, misogynistic, sex-obsessed men who themselves admit they are animals.

PS: Adam Levine is soooooo disgusting. His tattoos are hideous, he sounds like a dying chipmunk when he sings, and he repeatedly puts out crap material.

When I want some maroon in my life, I go for something like this!

Never Be Afraid to be Unpopular

Screen shot 2014-09-25 at 9.41.05 AM

As long as you’re doing it for the right reason(s), never be afraid to be unpopular.
The truth will always be opposed, and you’re in fantastic company.

“If God be for us, who can be against us?”
-Romans 8:31

PS: I’m not comparing myself to Christ! 🙂

Don’t Wait for Marriage for Your Life to Start

Screen shot 2014-09-25 at 8.50.56 AM

So many people today are waiting for their golden ticket—the ticket that they believe holds the key to the happiness they have always dreamed about. In their anxiousness, some begin to forget the simple joy they used to find in a candy bar. …The problem comes when we put our happiness on hold as we wait for some future event—our golden ticket—to appear….Don’t wait for your golden ticket. Forget not to be happy now.

( Dieter Uchtdorf)

“Don’t wait for marriage to start your life. Please don’t wish away this season just because it doesn’t look the way you thought it would. You don’t have to wait for a partner to invest in your space, in yourself, in your life.”
(Shauna Niequest)

Yes, yes, and YES!

Screen shot 2014-09-25 at 8.55.56 AM

“And this is not to say,

I won’t settle down one day.”

“We are not obedient because we are blind; we are obedient because we can see.”

“You say you’ll give me eyes in a moon of blindness.”

I went from blindness to sight
From darkness to light!

‘Cuz I got a golden ticket!”

-Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the 12 of TCOJCOLDS

PS: For my friends who may not know, J. Golden Kimball was an LDS apostle in the early 1900s who was quite a colorful and beloved figure; he grew up herding cows on a farm and is known for having a heart of gold, but quite a foul mouth….Also, that’s my beautiful golden retriever, Clover 🙂

What do you think about more than anything else?

Screen shot 2014-09-19 at 9.34.59 AM

“The things we care about most are the things we think about when we don’t have to think about anything else.”
– Sara Lynn (read that quote again if you didn’t quite grasp it the first time)

“Ultimately, you and I will be judged not only for our actions, but also for the desires of our hearts.”
-Marvin J. Ashton

“For as [a man] thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
-Proverbs 23:7

1) What kinds of things do YOU think about when you don’t have to think about anything else?
2) Where does your mind naturally drift?

There’s beauty after pain
If you can survive the struggle
There’s a chance for happiness again

How can you satisfy when the well’s run dry? (a poem)

Screen shot 2014-09-15 at 1.53.15 PM

There’s no supply
but the demand’s sky-high
How can you satisfy
when the well’s run dry?

My lips are parched
my back is arched
it’s hard to jumpstart
this dusty heart

So I pray for rain
a hurricane
to wash away
a desert of pain
Boy Playing in Rain

And I’ll stand in the storm as the heavens pour
I’m no longer thirsty, my cup runneth o’er

Screen shot 2014-09-15 at 1.55.14 PM

“You say you’ll give me a river in a time of dryness.”

Screen shot 2014-09-15 at 1.56.34 PM

To Share or Not to Share?

Shared sorrow is half sorrow.”

It’s not helpful to overwhelm others by constantly sharing all your feelings; the ability to tolerate and soothe your own feelings internally is an important skill to develop.”
Julie de Azevedo Hanks (my boss!)

Are even lovers powerless to reveal to one another what indeed they feel?
-British writer Matthew Arnold “The Buried Life”

And [Katherine] kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.
-Luke 2:19 (with just a bit of tweaking!)

How much do YOU share?
How much do you keep to yourself?

Playing on a Word: Faint

“O, how I faint when I of you do write.”

-Doctrine & Covenants 89:18, 20

-The last two sentences of Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper”

“This life I lead ain’t for the faint of heart.”
-Dierks Bentley

PS: I’ve given blood 4 times in my life and fainted 3 out of those four.

just watch it…

There’s a space between what’s said and what’s heard… (another poem)

Screen shot 2014-09-06 at 11.35.23 AM

There’s a gap between the writer and the reader
The listener and the speaker
The giver and the receiver

There’s a space between the meaning and the words
What’s said and what’s heard
What’s alleged and occurred

Understood and what’s meant
received and what’s sent
The action vs. the intent

Communication can lead to frustration
It’s hard to feel good when you’re misunderstood
Hate that darn, gaping gap
‘tween what’s real and abstract

So what’s the solution?
What can be done?
Should we try or surrender?
Can this battle be won?
It’s a tough transition; an imperfect, uncertain change
To try and speak the same language, be on the same page
But that’s why we’re here, right? That’s part of the test.
Sounds cheesy, I know, but just do your best!

Heather’s Poem:

Katherine, my dearest Fiji friend,
I’m sorry that you, I did offend.
I’m positive you are a great roommate
and when in Fiji, never did I hate.

Sometimes I pick on people, and it’s not okay
It’s a character flaw I need to put at bay
I cannot express to you how I really feel,
because I have pride that I cannot peel.

But if I had the ability to,
I would tell you, “I love you.”

You’re a loyal friend, and a beautiful girl.
In this oyster of a world, you are a pearl.
I don’t even mind you watch “Sex and the City”
Cuz let’s be honest, Carrie Bradshaw’s so pretty.

Anyway, I’ll end this hideous write.
And hope you and I are not in a fight.
Because your friendship means a lot to me.
And bosom buddies I want us to be.

– Heather Johnson, February 2011

I really love Heather a lot.

A lot.

Playing on a word: Shake

Screen shot 2014-09-04 at 2.31.30 AM

“You got to shake it, shake it off!”
-Ms. Taylor Swift

“Oh, that ye would awake and shake off the awful chains with which ye are bound.”
-Lehi (2nd Nephi 2:13 in the BOM)

“Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey; wake up, shake it off, and repeat.”
-John Mayer

“The faint figure behind seemed to shake the pattern, just as if she wanted to get out.”
-The Narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper”

I have caught the bug, and am looooooving this song/ video.

Listen, I know the thumbail (that picture) looks pretty sketchy, but it’s just one little part of the video where she’s making fun of twerking.

I just gotta SHAKE IT OFF!

“Suicide, what kinda talk is that??”

While we all mourn the death ofRobin Williams, let’s be oh so careful to not subtly condone suicide. When people say things like “he’s free from the pain,” what does that communicate to people considering taking their own lives? Don’t make it seem like a choice he/she wants to make.

Screen shot 2014-09-02 at 10.26.49 PM

If you know someone who is thinking of suicide, be a true friend and make sure he or she gets help.

Dieter Uchtdorf

This is an opportunity to talk about mental illness, to talk about hope for those afflicted.

It’s not disparaging to try to learn from this tragedy.
It is hopeful and could possible save a life.

Screen shot 2014-09-02 at 10.21.59 PMScreen shot 2014-09-02 at 10.20.45 PM

What kinda talk is that?”

-KW (both of them!)

PS: Before you call me insensitive, let me say that you know nothing about what I’ve seen in my family, friends, and my own life. Don’t tell me what I don’t know.

Want my myth and experience to match up (a short poem).

myth and experience

There’s so much I want,
but my ultimate wish
is to have my experience
catch up to my myth!

(think about it)

What’s YOUR myth?

What’s your experience?

Screen shot 2014-09-01 at 6.20.38 PM

Do they match up?
