A little poem for my favorite artist John Mayer:

“John Mayer is my Soothsayer”

Katherine Anne Wilkinson

Image

John Mayer

is my soothsayer

He’s my truth sayer
He doesn’t put on a-yers (airs)
So any naysayers
are just plain wrong!
When it comes down to
what is real and true
spoken by the genius named John.

Debt is crippling, so stay/ get out of it please!

ImageDebt is terrible. Debt is crippling. Debt takes a heavy toll on relationships, spirituality, and certainly on peace of mind, not to mention potentially killing future financial opportunities by wreaking havoc on credit scores.

Of course there are reasonable exceptions to go into debt, such as the wise purchase of a modest home or car, and making investments in education. However, accumulating (extravagant) debt can be one of the most destructive decisions we could ever made.

Quoting J Reuben Clark (who was alive during the Great Depression), former LDS President Gordon Hinckley counsels:

“Once in debt, interest is your companion every minute of the day and night; you cannot shun it or slip away from it; you cannot dismiss it; it yields neither to entreaties, demands, or orders; and whenever you get in its way or cross its course or fail to meet its demands, it crushes you….I am suggesting that the time has come to get our houses in order.”

So yeah, debt stinks. On the contrary, having financial security and exercising responsibility is one of the most liberating things we can experience.

Staying (or getting) out of debt
eliminates reasons to fret!

🙂

1) What can YOU do to take this counsel to heart?

2) How can you avoid or mitigate debt?

3) If you are currently in debt, what steps can you take and resources can you use to get out?

Release thyself from bondage

For a bit, my writing might have to slack, but rest assured that I’ll be back!

Image

Dear friends,
x        I appreciate those who read and/ or respond to my blog. Truly, I do!  And you better believe I love writing this thing and creating my art.  However, I’m gonna be taking a break for a few days ‘cuz things are about to get craaaaaaazy! You see, I’m moving, starting a new job, and doing about a billion other things. It’s all very exciting (and stressful), but it will cause my writing to cease temporarily. So once you dry your tears from this news, I encourage you to go do something productive, paint your toenails, make some cookies, and look forward to the day I return. Love you all so very much!

Let’s get away from too much propaganda, Panda!

I’ve taken a lot of time recently to post articles about political/ social issues. Those are always important to me, but I’m about to start getting back to stuff that is more artistic and perhaps a bit more lighthearted.

The best laid plans of mice and Katherine often go awry…

ImageI’m at a place in my life where I have hope and energy and faith.  I really am.  But I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I’m still disappointed and confused about some things.  Why haven’t certain opportunities worked out for me yet?  Things that have happened for a lot of my friends and family.  And don’t give me any of the crap about not comparing ourselves.  To avoid that completely is near impossible.

I’m a smart girl.  I’m a good girl.  I work hard.  I have a lot going for me.  But still there are a lot of things lacking.  And I’m not really talking about marriage here (although truthfully, that is a part of it).  I’m talking about career and milestones and other things I want.

I believe they’re coming.  I really do.  And I’ve made so many great strides.  Like, I’m finally starting to get my body back.  I ran my first 5K in a while yesterday, and I secured my lovely apartment in Salt Lake.  Still, I’m hungry for more things that simply aren’t here yet.  I just gotta keep pushing forward, and I will.  I’m happy, but I’m far from satisfied.

Sometimes the greater plan

is kinda hard to understand…

Texas state senator Wendy Davis is a disgusting human being.

Texas gubernatorial hopeful Wendy Davis advocated for killing babies in the womb 20 weeks or later, lied about her story, divorced her husband the day after he finished paying her law school bills, is rumored to have had extramarital affairs, AND abandoned her children to further her law career. And now it’s discovered she has these awful women promulgating her cause by mocking her paraplegic opponent. What a disgusting woman.

The best gun control/ 2nd amendment debate in history: Ben Shapiro won’t put up with Piers Morgan’s bullying!

Screen shot 2014-01-23 at 11.39.35 PM

Guns/ gun control is a hot topic (duh).  I personally hate with a passion any and all violence.  I hate it in theory, I hate it in practice, I hate it in movies and video games, and I hate when people speak about it flippantly and casually. I am not one who views shootings trivially at all.  I look forward to a smart solution to mitigate and avert such tragedies.

However, many (public) leftists/liberals/Democrats (whatever you want to call them) gang up on conservatives who seek to defend the 2nd amendment.  These bullies essentially say, “If you don’t agree with my policies to get rid of guns, you don’t care about dead kids.”  There can be no effective discussion with that kind of bully tactic.

In this famous debate from a year ago, Ben Shapiro won’t put up with that leftist bullying strategy.  He puts Piers Morgan in his place.  Oh boy, does he ever.

This debate is INCREDIBLE!  I learned so much from it.  And it’s also very entertaining.  Piers is used to redneck gun-lovers, but he is no match for one of the sharpest young Americans in the country.  Here it is:  (just watch it!)

Every major news outlet that reported on this story universally agreed that Ben won this by a landslide.   Even the Washington Post wholeheartedly agreed that Ben dominated Pierce, calling him “a foe of extraordinary polemical agility.”

Screen shot 2014-01-23 at 11.43.58 PM

Ben Shapiro is a bad@ss.

And we ain’t gonna stand for being bullied any longer!

I am soooooo behind, I hope you don’t mind! But please don’t go away, ‘cuz great things are on the way!

Image

Friends, I am so very behind in writing this blog.  I really do have so much to write, too!  I have been very busy with a lot of stuff lately (jobs, finances, exercise, social life, etc.)  Because of this, I haven’t been posting as much in the past few weeks.  But I have SOOOO much stuff in store!  Next week, I plan to seclude myself in a coffee shop for, like, 8 hours or something so I can catch up.

Thank you so much for reading.  It means more to me than I could ever find the words to express.  And I’m pretty good with words, so that’s really sayin’ something!  Please stay with me, as I promise there are so many funny, thought-provoking, spiritual, and overall awesome things to come.  In the words of my hero John Mayer, “Good love is on the way!

Thanks so much again.  I love you all.

I am so behind;

and I hope you don’t mind.

But please don’t go away,

Are you Pro-Choice? Do you support abortion rights? Take a look at your priorities, please.

Image

Some defend abortion rights with the reasoning of “I don’t personally believe in it, but who am I to tell a woman what to do.”  While these people may be genuinely well-meaning, this is an ignorant and cowardly position.

I realize I may be offending some here, but this is not a statement I will retract or apologize for.

If you are offended that I am calling you out as someone who sympathizes with, condones, or advocates for abortion in any way, take a look at your priorities.  You should instead be grossly offended that we daily kill children by the thousands in this country.  If that does not offend you, there is no sense in trying to reason with you.

Fortunately, even people who have been deceived have the opportunity to open their eyes, see the truth, and change their views; If you are one of these people, I invite you to do just that.

Do not let your pride or ego get in the way of the truth.

This señorita got a treat to translate Spanish!

Screen shot 2014-01-19 at 4.33.44 PMScreen shot 2014-01-19 at 4.36.15 PM

Today I translated for a Mexican woman in my ward who speaks only minimal English. I didn’t serve a Spanish-speaking mission (I didn’t serve a full-time mission at all, actually), but I have taken several advanced Spanish courses at BYU and lived for a summer in El Salvador. My translation certainly was not perfect, but overall it was a pretty awesome experience! It requires a lot of active thinking and engagement with the lesson to translate. And like anything worthwhile in life, you definitely can’t be afraid to make a mistake because you inevitably will. Totez wanna do it again if there is a need. ¡Qué bien!

Writer Matt Walsh: Why is adultery okay in politics? (think Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Anthony Weiner, and Elliot Spitzer for just a few examples)

Disclaimer: The following words are taken from an article (read it!) written by one of my favorite writers, Matt Walsh.  When borrowing from another source, it’s typically considered good practice to just use a bit of someone else’s work, then expound with your own thoughts.  However, in this case, Matt makes the point so perfectly and succinctly (as he usually does!) that I’ve decided to borrow more than just a line or two.  But like any decent person, I wouldn’t dream of plagiarizing.  Okay, enough about writing policies.  Here it is!

Image“When did infidelity become a moral misdemeanor?! When did we decide that a guy can cheat on his wife yet be an otherwise honest, trustworthy and upstanding gentleman? When did we determine that adultery happens in some sort of isolated vacuum, and it does not reflect negatively on the character of the person who commits it?

Adultery is the betrayal of THE MOST IMPORTANT promise you will ever make.  An adulterer has already looked into the eyes of his spouse and lied, probably hundreds of times, so how could I ever have any faith that he won’t look into a camera and lie to the faceless masses? Your marriage vow is more important than the vow you take for elected office. If you broke one, you’re at a high risk to break the other.

The people who downplay the significance of infidelity

only reveal something about themselves.”

Preach it, Matt.  Preach!

Image

Ye have broken the hearts of your tender wives,

and lost the confidence of your children…”

  Jacob 2:35

Image Image

Trust those who’d break the marriage vow?

With all respect, I don’t see how!

It truly would be silly and unwell

to place confidence in an Infidel

“You will one day stand aside and look at your difficult times,

and you will realize that He was always there beside you.”

-Thomas Monson

“We Never Walk Alone”

I absolutely love this idea.  It may initially seem trite or cliche, but I encourage you to look past that.  We really are never alone.  We always have friends, family, and leaders who love us.  And if you’re as lucky as me, you also have readers who love you :).  But most importantly, we have the Savior who will never abandon us.

I think back on my darkest days (read here), when I felt so incredibly alone.  No one understood me.  No one validated me.  I know I had people who cared about me, but it didn’t matter because I didn’t feel close to them or think I could trust anyone.  It was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced.  Literally the worst (and I used that word correctly!)  At the time, I couldn’t feel any love.  I couldn’t even feel divine love.  But looking back, I know it was there.  In the words of John (yet again), “it takes a little while, but you’ll be fine.”  The Savior was there with me  I know that now, and I’ll never doubt that again.

This song is wistful, nostalgic, and a little sad.  But it’s also hopeful.  Give it a listen.

A poem on the POTUS-Barack Obama, here you go:

Image

Let’s now take notice
of our current POTUS
It’s time again to talk (and mock!)
of the man called Barack

We’d have enough headache and drama
caused by Czar Obama
He’s had so many faux pas
with his terrible laws

The “Affordable” Care Act
is just that: an ACT!
For all the rights he’s breached
I sure wish he’d be impeached

What’s more: many who oppose him are labeled as racist
But that is so stupid, as there is no basis!
And no matter how tries
All he tells are lies

To conclude, lemme just say
I wouldn’t want to be Barack Obama on Judgment Day.

“Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets….” [and other amazing stuff that changed my life!]

  shakespeare bruce

During my years at BYU, I had the choice opportunity to take two different courses on Shakespeare from world renowned scholar Bruce Young (who, by the way, is as personable and Christlike as he is brilliant). My eyes and heart were opened to the insight that the most famous and lauded playwright so eloquently offered on Christianity (and also Judaism and other faiths), history, family dynamics, social and political structure, and humanity in general, (and of course linguistics, vocabulary, iambic pentameter, and other literary/ poetry-related concepts) that are incredibly relevant to our world today.

Screen shot 2014-01-13 at 9.03.10 PM

I in no way pretend to now be a Shakespeare expert, but still I am eternally grateful for the experience to study the works of the tremendously important and influential writer William Shakespeare under the direction of such a capable and passionate teacher as Bruce Young. Much of what I learned in these courses has stayed with me, and I very often find myself encouraged and inspired by it.

What are YOUR thoughts/ experiences with studying Shakespeare?

(hint: If it doesn’t seem like your thing, I encourage to reconsider. It doesn’t have to be an alienating, pretentious, unfulfilling experience or one that is reserved for English nerds like myself. You just might be pleasantly surprised.)

Also, your 9th grade study of “Romeo & Juliet” doesn’t count (though I do like this picture!).

Sweet Hour of Prayer…Literally!

Image

Why not take the title idea of the hymn “Sweet Hour of Prayer” literally?

For those of my friends who are people of faith, why not set aside a time in the near future where you pray/ ponder/ meditate for 60 uninterrupted minutes For all the time we spend on social media, we can surely give and commit that time to the Lord.

I hope I’m not over-stepping my bounds in issuing this challenge.  Don’t wanna be preachy or nothin’.  Just an idea.

“I have got so much to do today that I need to spend another hour on my knees praying!”

My soul has often found relief…

And AJ has a version.  Who knew?!

(Time to wrap it up, Kath)

I would encourage you all to seriously consider taking one full hour to experience a sweet hour of prayer.

Abortion and “The Hunger Games”

Image

The theme of child sacrifice in the supposed name of acting for the common good of society that is an integral (even central) part of the Hunger Games trilogy has undeniable parallels to the sad and violent act of abortion.

(More to come on this issue.)

And don’t anyone dare think or insinuate that I am being tasteless by including the graphic picture of an aborted child.  If you support abortion rights, you support this being legal, and you must not turn a blind eye to the reality of it.  You should know exactly what it is you are saying women should have a right to.  If you cannot bear the sight or thought of this (which I hope you can’t!), then it’s high time you change your stance on the issue.

I’m Katherine… And I’m a Mormon!

Image  Image

I really love the fact that “Mormon” is part of the title of my blog.  There is no question, there is no hiding, and there is no agenda.  It’s crystal clear that I am a Latter-day Saint every time someone reads a post, and that’s cool.  I had a friend comment that it might be a turn-off to some people who visit my blog for the first time and may not be a fan of the Church.  Even if that is the case, I don’t mind.  Can’t please everyone, so I might as well do what I want.  🙂

I also like the fact that it’s not the only part of my title/ identity: Not everything on my blog is about Christianity/ the Church, and I’d like to think that there’s something on here for everyone.

But still, I am unabashedly and unapologetically LDS/ Christian.

I seek to speak what is true and real, despite what others may choose to feel.

Image

When I speak/ write publicly about controversies, social/political issues, and ultimately about what I believe, I’m not afraid of hurting anyone’s feelings.  I refuse to pull any of my punches (figuratively!).  I don’t believe in holding back from saying the truth or being shy about what needs to be said.  In the words of (one of) my hero(s) Ben Shapiro, “Punch back twice as hard.”

I’d like to think that I use tact and discretion, but not at the expense of honesty.

One of my core beliefs is “expression.”  I will (almost!) never limit myself in expressing expression.

“Use boldness, but not overbearance” (Alma 38:12)

I can be meek and kind, but still speak my mind.

I say what I need to say.

What about YOU?

I seek to speak what is true and real,

despite what others may choose to feel.

Wanna be bold, but not overbearing

Not be unkind, yet still be daring.

Oh, the terror of Trial & Error!

Image

Trial & error is one of my favorite learning processes. Making mistakes usually leads to permanent and indelible epiphanies and knowledge, not to mention often leaving us with great stories.

Screen shot 2014-01-12 at 7.03.43 PM

However, this learning strategy does not work in every aspect of life. Some things are simply not worth the risk. And extreme trial & error is usually very inappropriate when making grand decisions on behalf of other people (government, for example).

Image

I personally do not trial & error the commandments. Nor do I make casual mistakes or risky transactions with (large amounts of) money. Sometimes, you just have to rely on the experts and play it safe.

Screen shot 2014-01-12 at 7.05.10 PM

PS. You probably already know this, but the word fear as it is used in the scriptural graphic above denotes respecting or obeying, not being scared.  We are to follow God, but not be afraid of Him.

Are you happy now?

ImageForget not to be happy NOW!

-Dieter Uchtdorf

Totez love this idea!  It can be all too easy to promise ourselves that we will be content once we reach a certain landmark:  “I’ll be happy once I get married,” or “I’ll be happy when I reach my goal weight.”  Of course we should set our sights forward with joyful anticipation of good things to come, buuuuuut, we have to find something good in the present moment too, ya know?  Can’t live in the future.  So live now.  And find reasons to celebrate today.

“Government programs are so often like straightening deck chairs on the Titanic.” -Neal A. Maxwell

“The living of one  (1) protective principle of the gospel is better than a thousand compensatory governmental programs—which programs are, so often, like straightening deck chairs on the Titanic.”

-Neal Maxwell

“We’re going down.  And you know that we’re doomed.”

Omgosh, Elder Maxwell’s great is INCREDIBLE!  Our own personal worthiness and commitment to obey the Lord is infinitely more effective (and important!) in securing for ourselves a safe and happy life, both at the present time and in the future, than is any outside group or program (especially government-related).  Not to mention that the imagery and use of mixed metaphors in this quotation is artistically and brilliantly creative and poignant.  What a beautiful writer this apostle of the Lord is.

FRIENDS!

1)  What “protective principles of the gospel” do YOU observe?  How do they secure your own safety (literally and metaphorically) ?

2)  How can you obey gospel principles even better to bring yourself even more security?

Government programs… are often like straightening deck chairs on the Titanic.

Why Thomas Jefferson would think the Obama nation is an abomination: Calling healthcare a right isn’t right!

Image

f

Allow me to throw out an intellectual bone that just may ruffle some feathers:

To use the language of Thomas Jefferson, we as Americans (and as human beings) are “endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights” (Preamble to the Declaration of Independence).  So God gave us our rights, NOT the government. The government’s job is to protect those rights, but not to add any new ones or take away any existing rights (negative vs. positive rights).

So let’s relate this principle to the controversy of Obamacare. First, it is unconstitutional to the core (thankfully, the American public and those in power are realizing this).  But even if healthcare was a right, why should we be forced to exercise it? That is coercive and unconscionable.

             Our founding documents clearly lack

permission for the Affordable Care Act!

SO REPEAL IT, ALREADY!
