Glasses are weird. Don’t get me wrong, they’re awesome! But they’re weird. Stop and think about it. They consist of a frame holding together two circular pieces of glass that perch on your nose and are tucked behind your eyes to secure them on your head. Pretty weird. Know what else they are? GENIUS!
Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States and a key participant in the American Enlightenment period (duh), is the mastermind who is historically credited as being the inventor of bifocals. Hmm, I wonder if he had an inclination of just how massively important and critical his development would become. Who would have ever thought that something that was very likely once incredibly hideous looking would spawn such a revolution, not only related to optometry, but also in the sense of fashion and self-expression? Glasses have forever affected our global economy. Wow, Ben Franklin was incredibly smart (understatement). In so many ways, but even if all he ever did was invent glasses, that man would still be beyond brilliant.
I personally am really glad for glasses. They make me look cute. They make me look smart. They make me look like an official scholar (but not in a pretentious way!). Oh yeah, and they help me see!
We oughta be thankin’
Mr. Benjamin Franklin
He was inventive and vocal
’bout the need for bifocals.
And now the world masses
are wearing his glasses!
