At some point or another, everyone has to experience what Mormon writer Joanna Brooks calls “spiritual puberty,” which is basically the evolutionary growth process of one’s belief system. It’s where we trial-and-error wrestle with our faith, doubts, logic, and conscience as we try our best to reconcile any inconsistencies we might find.
Sometimes people even experience a complete paradigm shift where everything they once knew or believed for certain is turned on its head and then may or may not be profoundly changed. Spiritual puberty can be heartbreaking, embarrassing, disillusioning, and painful, but it can also be enlightening, comical, and faith-affirming.
