The Anglo-Saxons didn’t believe in an afterlife…They wanted to create a sense of permanence to fashion meaning to their existence because once they were dead, they were dead. Thus came about storytelling! A man’s stories were passed around even after he had died, so in a way he still lived on. I DO believe and (even proclaim to know) of an after-life but I still love the tradition of making purpose, immortalizing our experiences, and leaving record for others to learn from and enjoy. And thus in immortalizing, we create meaning.
